Police car parking in my parking spot

May I bother you with another question…?

It’s really not a big deal to me but I can see how it might become an issue.

I’m renting a room that happens to be above a deli. There’s customer parking in a small lot in front of it, right by the main road, and I’m also supposed to park my car there. I’ve been parking in the same spot ever since I moved there because it’s the one most off to the side and closest to my side entrance. Customers very rarely park there.

But for the last month or so there’s a police car parked in “my” spot almost every night for a couple of hours. It used to be just once in a while. I know they like to park there to catch speeders because they’re hidden behind a billboard and they pull over tons of people going over a hill too fast.

I usually get home from work around that time, so they’re sitting in “my” space. I figured whatever, I’ll park in another spot. Not a problem at night when there’s no customers.

But my boyfriend is really annoyed by it and he insists on parking his car in that spot every chance he gets just to block them. I know he’s just trying to be an *** (doesn’t like ya guys too much…). Now he’s talking about putting an old trash-heap car in that spot and leaving it there permanently.

Ya know, I’d rather stay on their good side, but can I/my boyfriend get in trouble for blocking that parking spot?

Honey, dump your boyfriend he has "issues" and needs about a years worth of anger management classes

Unless posted, the parking spot is free range

Just my humble unsolicited jaded opinion

That lot is the private property of the deli. Your boyfriend could get in trouble from the deli. If your boyfriend puts an old heap (non running car) on their property then he could get charged with illegal dumping.

Unless the spot is specifically marked as reserved for you, habitually parking there doesn't make it yours.

You might ask the landlord to mark it as "tenant parking only".

And your boy friend is about to bite off more than he's gonna want to chew.

Lol. I asked, so your opinion wasn't "unsolicited". Dunno about humble and jaded. ;)

My boyfriend's had a few issues with "you guys" a while back and is still holding a grudge. He'll grow out of it.

See, I haven't talked to the deli owners/land lord about it. In fact, I'm not even sure they're aware of the cops parking there because the deli is closed at night and the owners don't live there.

If I tell my boyfriend what you said, he'll get a (barely) running piece 'o crap to park there.

I know where I work, if it was parked for more than 72 hours on a street, it was be considered abandoned, then towed at the owner's expense in addition to getting a ticket. You should be happy they're keeping YOUR neighborhood safe.

Oh, I don't consider it to be MY spot nor do I expect the landlord to mark it as such. I like it because it's easier to carry groceries inside, etc., but there's plenty of other parking available. Not crazy about the lights flashing outside my window though. I think it makes my boyfriend uncomfortable having a police car sit outside. Brings back bad memories.

But what if the landlord did not want the cops parking there (for whatever reason)? Could he tell the police not to park there? It's his property, right? So it should be up to him. But as I said, I haven't spoken to him yet and have no clue how he feels about it.

I seriously doubt the cops have any idea they are inconveniencing you at all. I bet it could resolved a lot easier if no one gets silly about it. You might go buy a reserved parking sign at a store and put it up yourself. Or maybe leave a nice note on the windshield of the police car explaining the situation.

Well, it's not on the street, but a privately-owned parking lot. So not sure if that would apply there too? And how would you know that the car isn't running? Just because it hasn't been moved for 72 hours doesn't mean it cannot be moved.

Trust me, I don't mind having them out there. Gives me peace of mind when I come home from work and it's dark and I don't have to worry about the neighborhood scum hanging out outside.

EDIT: Never mind. You said it would be "considered abandoned". Doesn't mean it's not running.

Most business owners are not going to call the Police and tell them to stay away. It's bad business, sends a bad message about their business, and if they get broken into it makes them look pretty silly. Honestly, I'd be a little more concerned about the boyfriend than the parking spot. He sounds like a real tool.

Assuming he was arrested or ticketed, he needs to grow up and get over it. There are plenty of other fish in the sea.
