Thanks. So would would that be? Would you say that I shouldn't bother applying for something like NYSP with my background, and should just go NYPD? I don't want to try hard for something like NYSP if I don't have a shot at it when NYPD seems to have a good path for detectives as well.

I'd be willing to bet that if you apply for any dept and tell them straight up about your situation, they'll give you a good idea if they're going to want you or not. You'll find out long before you have to do anything involving "trying hard."

If you want to join NYSP, give it a shot. It is competitive, but honestly I don't think that either is that major of an incident. Either you'll get DQed after you tell the background investigator about it, or they'll allow you to continue. There are a few troopers on here, but they don't post that often.
