What should someone do who received a large amount of money in the mail?

Answer may sound simple: Be happy and spend it!

But a friend of my girlfriend's received a package in the mail a while ago with 2K in cash in it. No note, no nothing, no return address. She has no clue where it came from or what it is for.

The postmark is from a smaller town in TX, but she doesn't know anybody from there.

She is scared to touch the money and doesn't really know if she is "allowed" to spend it, or what else she should do with it, if anything.

I'm not sure this is even remotely a LE question, but any advice on whether she could/should just enjoy the 'gift horse' or 'report' it somewhere? What would you tell someone who came to your station with this 'dilemma'?

You know, I feel bad for this girl. She 'should' be happy about it, and all it does is make her paranoid and fearful. :(

I'm guessing its drug money. But thats just a guess. People don't usually mail large sums of US currency, especially w/o return addresses.

Hate to sound cynical, but how well do you know her? Stuff like that just doesn't happen out of the blue. If it had her name (even misspelled) and her address on it, I'd be willing to bet she knows more than she's sharing.

This goes way beyond the "Oh gee, look at that" factor...... I've been around way too long to believe "innocent mistakes" like this happen.

a couple things come to mind; just for the sake of argument let's pretend that she is a good person, not into drugs or anything, church goer and has fallen on hard times...
Someone at church has figured out she's in a spot, had the hat passed when she wasn't there and collected a nice little care package. Really, it could happen... :D
