Question Best form of Martial Arts?

Anyone have any idea what would be the best form of martial arts to know as a police officer. As graduation day moves in, I wouldnt mind knowing more than our standard defensive tactics training. There is a local Karate club teaching what is called "Pukang Tang Soo Do". Apparently this emphasizes on punch and kick techniques. Which i sort of figured was somewhat of a no-no in LE as opposed to grappling techniques.
    Any suggestions or input?

Thanks for that post of the thread i went through it. Answered some questions. I suppose I would just want to know , in general, say you had to send your officers to a martial arts training facility. Of all of them that there are, what would you choose? I know a department probly wouldnt do that, but humor me here!!

    I agree with Dan, KravMag.

After all some 85% of all "tussles" find their way to the ground...and Krav specializes in ground fighting techniques.

Krav Mag seems to be the choice of people here. So if anyone is very familiar with differnt types of martial arts, maybe tell me the primary specialization is (ground fighting, kicking, punching...?) ex. Krav Mag = ground fighting, so TKD would be...? and Jiu Jitsu would be...

I know I'm asking alot, but i am just trying to get familiar with the issue.

And Mcsap, i just knew someone would say something to to that effect, just a matter of when. LoL!!

IMO, Krav is more stand up than ground but covers both. TKD (traditional) is stand up. JJ (traditional) is mainly stand up. BJJ is mainly ground.

Write more later when I have time...

lol I thought it was so you could fold the BG into any number of different shapes...

ferris, do a search of "martial arts" here and you'll see a Bunch of threads to scan. Do a search of "martial arts" on Google and you'll get a Bunch more.

www.selfdefenseforums.com is a pretty good reference site (one of many)

As Frank Trigg says, Go - Try - Do.

Best thing is to actually go and see for yourself. Some places offer free classes. IMO, if you can't find one school/style that covers all the ranges of combat, then you should crosstrain yourself.

Wing Chun and Jun Fan gung fu are a couple of very good styles to look into, Francis Fong in Atlanta is one of the foremost instructors in these styles.

Judo is a good form to practice. It combines throwing and takedowns to get someone to the ground while also using extensive ground techniques to control the situation.

    My preferred style.

Work mate of mine, youngish, is a third dan in Karate exponent (takes it real serious!). Keeps it real quiet - the real serious mysterious ninja type. Trains in several other styles just to keep himself informed - puts on his serious face when discussing martial arts. Also a firearms and Police Survival Tactics instructor.

    Anyhoo.

I front up to him one day and offer him a chance to put all his skills into practice with me, one-on-one, in the meal room. He gets all Kung-Fooey and wants to walk away and be-as-one-with nature. By this time a few of our associates have walked in to see the final result of the 'confrontation'.

He is cornered and I negotiate a do-or-die see-who-can-strike-the-other-person-first type exchange. He can't back down so he accepts the challenge.

There we are, face to face, crowd has gathered, cut the tension with a knife, bead of sweat across my brow because I get to have first crack at the title.

Summoning all my skills I perform the dreaded 'Three Stooges Hammer Strike - involving hammering my right fist with my left fist causing my right arm it to swing in a 360 degree arc striking him on top of the head'. Hee Hee Hee Ho Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha....

He is in absolute shell shock and I can't continue as I am now on the floor suffering laugher's syndrome. Yes. He did see the funny side of it and is still a mate.

(For those of you too young to know anything about the Three Stooges I feel sorry for your loss.)

The Stooge System of Self Defense also encompasses such principles/techniques as "any object as a weapon", misdirection/redirection of your opponent's focus, and even Bil Gee attacks and counters!
