This isn't a technical question about law enforcement - I'm working on backstory for my characters. I want to address why they went into police work and want it to be believable.

I come from a military family - grandfather landed at Utah beach w/ the 29th, Uncle in Korea, father in Vietnam. My dad did 22 in the Marines, then another 10 in LE. So I was raised to believe in civic responsibility, service to your country, and duty. I also love Chicago. Summertime by the lake, springtime downtown, the history, the practicality of the people. Never wanted to leave. And I wanted to give back to the city I felt meant so much to me. So...I get to be of service and fulfil my sense of duty, to a city that means much to me.
Fringe benefits are driving 110mph on city streets and chasing bad guys down alleys. Now that's just FUN!
