40 Years-Old, Too Old to be a COP?

I am 40 years-old and I want to become a San Diego Police Officer. Am I too old? Please give me an honest opinion!

Some background:

I retired 2 years ago from the Marine Corps after 20 years of active-duty service. I was enlisted, GySgt (E-7). My job was non-combat related and I did not go to Iraq or Afghanistan. Honorbale discharge.

I served as a Reserve Police Officer in Biloxi, Mississippi for 14 months (1997-1998). No bad evals, all good.

I am still in fairly good shape and I am sure I can pass the Physical Abilities Test.

100% clean background. Never been arrested, only a couple traffic tickets.

Never, ever did drugs. Never even tried marijuana.

Is 40 too old or do I have a chance? Please advise. Thank you.

40 is nowhere near too old. One of my academy classmates was 52 when we took the course back in 1990.

I suspect you'd run rings around the youngsters.

In my department, you have to be 39 prior to entering the academy. That doesn't mean I agree with it, but it is our department's regulation. Make sure that SDPD doesn't have a similar requirement.

Otherwise, I don't think it is too old. We had a guy who was 39 and turned 40 in the academy. He smoked a lot of younger guys during the physical testings.

I agree with the others many of the officers I work with are retired AF. Most did 20 plus (a couple did 25 plus) prior to getting hired with us. As long as SD doesn't have an age limit I say go for it.

Nope. 56 year old graduated in my class...he was in good shape too! Craziness! :D

Believe me I'd rather have someone with your experience back me up on a call than some of the 22 year old kids that my department has been hiring lately.

I'd say you have a great chance.

SDPD has no age limit and I have been thinking about this for about a year now so I am finally going to do it. I have decided that I am going to take the written test and pyhsical fitness test in May.
