Question Legal way to carry a firearm in a vehicle

What is the legal way to carry a firearm to the range in the State of california. Would i leave it in its case? In the bed of the truck? Keep ammo in the cab or visa versa?

California is it's own little nation, hopefully someone will be along from California that can answer your question. I'm sure the laws in my state proabably won't be the same where your at.
Excuse me Officer, I have a stupid Question. "No problem, I've got a stupid answer for you!"

Locked container in the vehicle separated from the ammo would be a good start. If I were you, and I lived in CA, I'd buy the book " How to own a firearm in CA and stay out of jail". It really is good reading, is updated annually, and is a much better source of information than an internet forum.

Has a general rule, putting the firearm some place you don't have immediate access to it (trunk or locked suitcase) and separate from the ammo and you should be fine.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

Handguns in CA, per Penal Code 12025, have to be either in the trunk or a locked container, other than the jockey box. The weapon cannot be loaded. Long guns do not have to be in a locked container, but may not be loaded. (loaded weapon in CA if an unexpended shell is in the chamber or magazine) There is not currently, or at least that I can recall, a penal code in CA associated with separating ammo from weapons while in a vehicle.

Legoate is right, get the book, because I left CA a year ago, and there may have been changes.
