This morning a neighbor told my husband that a detective was taking pictures of our house. Why would he do that, we are scared.

It could have been an insurance adjuster or a realtor. Call you police and ask if you're worried. They'll tell you if they were there.

It wasn't a realtor because we are not selling our house. We know the detective that was taking the pictures. He also took pictures of the house across the street.

Anyone can take a picture from public property of your house.

Since you know him why don't you ask him? And since you know him why would you say it was not a realtor because you are not selling your house, rather than just state you know it is not a realtor because you know it was a detective?

Realtors take photos of homes that aren't for sale all the time to use as comparables to homes that ARE for sale.
