I was just wondering, does anyone know what the 'official' reason behind residency requirements for police officers are?
I have heard its becuase they know the roads/area better, but I am not sure if that is an actual reason, or just speculation.

Naw. If the dept furnishes take home cars, they have a reason to require it just because of gas savings, etc. Sometimes they just want to force the people to live and pay taxes where they work.

You only need to live in the Town I work in to get hired, after your hired you can move wherever you want. If your a transfer residency doesnt apply.

It used to be because of gun laws. IE a NY cop couldn't legally possess his weapon, or his hollow point ammo in NJ (pre-HR218).
Also say you're a NYC cop, and you live in buffalo, how could you POSSIBLY commute every day.DONLON
I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.
