    State of Kentucky Registration

I recently bought a car from a car lot, in which the car still had the licence plate and registration of the previous owner in the glove box. I went and had insurance put on it today in my NAME, would it be legal to drive the car since it has insurance in my name, but the registration and tags is in someone elses name but are still good till August? I'm in need of driving the car, and the car lot that I bought from went out of town and wont be back for another week, in which then they will sign the title for me. I have a purchase receipt, so technically would it be legal to drive?

Also, I wanna put that the car is not STOLEN, I bought the car from a family car lot and at the time of buying the notary public wasnt there to sign the title.

If you bought it from a dealer, why didn't they give you 30/60/90 day temp tag?

    No.

The previous owner most likely had the plate cancelled. So if you drove around with that plate you could be cited for "improper plate"

BTW, if you do not have possession of the title (in you name) the vehicle does not belong to you, receipt or not. It would be impounded and only the registered owner could get it released from impound. Since you are NOT the owner, you could never get the car out of impound until you have the title transferred into you name.

    Question

I have the title but the dealer has yet to sign it over to me on the title. They did give me temp. tags, so could I just use the temp tags and the insurance I had transfered to it and be legal?

Its my cousins lot that sold me the car, at the time she wasn't there to notary the title however on the title it has where the owner signed it over to the car lot and I have temp tags with insurance in my name for the car. So I should be fine?

If you do get stopped, you'll be cited for Failure to Transfer Registration of a Motor Vehicle - a violation. Why chance a $200 ticket. Just transfer the registration over and be done with it.
