Is it possible to get charged a DWI for prescription opioids if you have a prescription for them? Reason behind this is I am a sales rep for a drug testing lab in California. I am desperately trying to research this topic to have amo to convince these doctors it is important to drug test your pain management patients.

Yes.
Impaired is impaired, prescription or not.
I have and will continue to make these cases as I find them.
I am a Field Sobriety Testing Instructor for my state, FWIW.

alcohol is legal, yet you can still be DWI with alcohol, so why not with a controlled, but prescribed drug?

Yep. DWI charges depend on the way the product is used, not whether the substance is legal or not.
That would be a separate charge. :DDon't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.
