Depends. A mob of AARP protesters who are somewhat "peacefully" demonstrating but refusing to follow a cop's orders to clear the area would receive a different response than a mob of gangbangers in a high crime area. Use of force would step up, but to what degree would depend on the totality of the circumstances, and what is reasonable at that time and situation.

A few years back I was talking with a USBP agent who is stationed in upstate New York. He told me that several years back the local Indians had decided to close the reservation to all federal agents/officers. Well he went in through a back way.

As he's trying to leave he gets stopped and surrounded by 15+ Indians. My question was why didn't you shoot? He told me that at that time USBP had the S&W 686 and there was a lot more then 6 guys around him. Plus he knew that if he did he would definately be killed. Long story short he got beat up (not bad) and they took his truck. Truck and weapon were later recovered.

The last time that happened, and it was a long time ago, my partner and I got surrounded in a housing project. I got a wild look on my face, pulled my gun and started screaming, "I"M GONNA KILL ALL YOU MUTHA F******!" at the top of my lungs. Amazing enough, a pretty wide path was opened for us.....

I try not to get myself into those situations, but it happened once. I had 6 guys standing around me and one mouthed off, "What are you going to do if we just kick your *** right now." So I walked up too him, looked him right in the eyes and told him he better go get more friends. It took him off guard so much he didn't know what the hell to think and everyone cooperated from that point on.

I used to work with a guy that would scream like a girl, all the bad guys would get tickled and I would just kind of ease out while they were laughing uncontrollably...:D
