    Radar/Laser Detectors

Most of my friends in my car club and some of my family members have radar detectors, and yet somehow they always seem to get tickets. I almost bought one until i saw how ineffective they were when my buddy got "flashed."Those things are pricey and the whole idea is supposed to be that you "invest" in the detector so that you wont have to pay any speeding tickets (ridiculous huh?).

Now I know some of you on here have nabbed speeders with detectors, what do you tell them? and aren't there fines or confiscation of the devices as well?
Can you pull someone over just for having a detector in their vehicle? I try to tell my buds that the police are always gonna have better radars than the detectors, but they always find out the hard way. I've had a friend get stopped on a military base and they told him he couldn't have the detector on because fighter jets would pick up the signal, I wouldn't want to be in their crosshairs.

They're legal in Texas, but they don't do you any good. All they do is let you know you've been caught.

When I see a radar detector in a vehicle then there will be a speeding ticket (or whatever I've pulled you over for). There's only one reason to have one. Is a piece of equipment that doesn't even work anymore really worth the money you'd pay for it along with the speeding ticket?

I call them a "stupid tax". They don't work any better than those "Anti-camera' plate covers or "laser jammers" . Why should I be concerned that people want to pay more than the fine in advance? :p

I've had people toss them out of car windows before when the reality sinks in.

For passenger vehicles I believe they're legal in all but virginia. For commercial vehicles, over a certain weight (16,000 lbs?), they're illegal under some state laws, but also federal law.

As for their effectiveness, radar today is instant on, AND its used as a secondary to the visual estimate of the officer.

If I catch you speeding and I see a radar detector in your window you WILL get a ticket.

Or, you could do the safe, mature, and intelligent thing and just not break the law.

If I see a detector in your car, you ARE getting a ticket rather than any sort of break you may have gotten. If you want to play the game, then you got to take the lumps that come with it.

Hmmm. I've never had any experience with them at all. If they don't work very well, I wonder why they're illegal????

    Pretty much what i figured..

Yeah, I've never heard of any of my friends getting warnings when they get pulled over with their detectors. I'm glad i never got one, they're really annoying in town where they go off every time you pass a store. Back in High School I got nabbed numerous times for traffic offenses and i ended up getting more warnings than tickets, I always admitted to speeding and anything else they got me on and basically followed the guidelines, like keeping your hands in sight and answering all the questions, all that fun stuff. If I would have had a detector than i don't think i would have been getting any warnings at all.

Oh, They work in the sense that they tell you when radar is striking your vehicle (assuming the detect the frequency of radar being used). However, everyone I know uses instant on radar- meaning they visually estimate the speed then click on the radar which instantly displays the speed. So, by the time you realize you've been hit by radar, the officer already has your speed.

Now, if like some folks with radar detectors, you then slam on your brakes to slow down the instant radar hits you- it makes it really obvious that you are using a radar detector. From my experience that tips me in the directions of making the stop rather than letting the person slip by waiting for a bigger fish.

Radar detectors aren't illegal where I'm at.

I always liked to sit in store parking lots who had the sensor doors and sent out those signals to Detectors.

That way I could catch the ones who were regular speeders thru the area.;)
