Whats the real deal with speed limits?

When do cops finally start caring enough to pull you over? Usually when I drive it's around 8-10 miles over the speed limit, depending on the in/decline. I've gotten a handful of ticket for 11 over, but never any less.

When do the cops actually start caring? Do you see someone doing 9 miles over and just shrug your shoulders?

I just want to know so I can safely speed.

Why would I be joking? I don't want any more tickets.

First, let me ask you this... why would you want to speed? In most short trips, you only gain a few seconds by traveling 9 MPH faster. Depending on how many stop lights you have to pass and how they're timed, going faster may even make your trip longer.

Why bother? Because it's a thrill to think you're getting one over on us?

The "tolerance" you're looking for varies...

Daytime, sunny, dry road, no traffic, you're doing 10 over? I probably wait for the clown doing 20 over.

Daytime, sunny, dry road, school zone at 7:30AM, you're doing 10 over? You get a ticket.

Daytime, sunny, dry road, stop+go traffic, and you're doing 10 over down the shoulder? Two tickets.

Day vs. Night, weather conditions, roadway type, pedestrians, traffic volume... are just a few of the things I take into account in deciding whether it's reasonable to stop someone for X MPH over.

Could be 15 over, could be 3 over. Could be less than the posted limit if conditions dictate.

Because only someone with the mental capacity of a flea would come to a police website and ask how to break the law- and expect an answer.

Pretty simple- stop breaking the law.

I've just always been curious what cops think when they see someone speeding, but not doing too much over. I've always thought it should be a percentage... I mean, doing 15 miles over in a 70 zone isn't as bad as doing 15 over in a 15 zone, agree?

I take school zones seriously, I have a friend who accidentally hit a kid while speeding. Fortunately he's okay, but he paid a lot of fines. I dont' make a lot of money, so I can't afford those prices.

Then your solution is very simple. Drive the speed limit. Drive less than the limit in inclement weather or if traffic volume and/or pedestrian traffic so indicate.

You'll be amazed at the savings in traffic fines, insurance premiums and fuel costs.

    Safely speed...

Most of the officers in my area don't even drive the speed limit.

Curt, thanks for your honest answer, but the rest of you aren't helping by calling me names and telling me my mental capasity is low. Everyone speeds, and if it weren't for us speeders, most of you could be out of a job.

No, they don't... you want to think they do, so you can justify your own speeding.

No, we wouldn't be out of jobs. There's more than enough stupidity to go around. There's loads of idiots with thumping systems and oversize rims to keep us busy. We never know when we might find a CD thief.

If you are referring to another post of mine, you can have the case. I burned the good ones to mp3, no need for the physical discs anymore.

Wow, a bit bitter because you were told if you don't want any more tickets to stop speeding. That's reality. How about thinking ahead to what the consequences of your actions are and whether or not you (or your pocket book) can afford them.

As for out of a job... -Thanks for the laugh, I'd send you rep but you would perceive that the wrong way. Muffin, there is far more to police work than just ticket writing, just maybe not when it comes to you and your ride.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to add a moderate annoyance to my ignore list. Enjoy your evening.

Well when I see you driving down the road my tolerance just became 1mph over the limit.
