Im applying for a small department by my house, they have 2 openings, im just curious as to how many people should i expect to be going against, if you guys can just throw out a number as to what you experienced etc.

However many applied minus about 10% will show up.

50% of those who take the written test will fail.

Then...

50% of the remnant will fail the physical and or psych.

Then...

50% ( or more ) of the remnant will then fail the background.,

So it doesn't matter how many apply because that number will be reduced.

How small is small? 10 officers? 60? 100?

Any answer you get here will be pure conjecture.

But since we're guessing, I'd say it would be reasonable to expect anywhere from 5 to 35 applicants per position, with a median of 20.

We only have 18. ;)

I'd say there will probably be less than 50 applications total turned in, depending on the job market where you are, which I also don't know.

we're a small dept. and are taking apps; we've had over 20 so far, we only have 8 officers including the BC.
