    Just a Few basic questions.

First off a little about myself:

I am 19 years old, my grandfather is a retired chief of police. I have always been around someone that was an officer. I grew up thinking that I wanted to become a chef. I went a tech highschool for culinary arts. I than was accepted into The Culinary Institute of America. I have finished a year and a half. I was supposed to go back today, after finishing internship at Food Network in the city. I am 7 to 8 months away from graduating with my associates degree in culinary arts and business degree. Also the schools tuition is now up to 37 thousand a year. Since last May (08) I have been getting feelings that I am not so certin this is what I want with my life. I am now feeling, which I have felt this feeling before, that I would like to become an officer. So my questions are as follow:

I have chrons disease and ulcerative colitis (which are lower bowl problems). I take medication each and every day (about 14 pills a day). I know they do a med. check before training. Will this be an issue?

Also, degree wise, what do stations look for in a cadet? AOS in Criminal Justice? If any degree at all?

Boot camp, how long is it? How intense is it?

Now you may be saying, "oh culinary school, this kid must be out of shape....." I played varsity soccer 4 years in highschool and varsity golf 1 year. I have played sports all my life. I am 6'3'' and 170lbs. I am in shape. I could use more muscle and I can get it if I work on it.

I am very interested in becoming an officer to help protect and serve my fellow townspeople.

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thank you guys!

Where are you looking? State, local, or Fed?

Hate to say it but I really don't think anyone here can give you a good answer. The questions are just to vauge.

Degree or no degree? Well that depends on the agency some require a degree and some don't. CJ degree? do a search on that it's been well covered.

As far as the medical issues that's all up to the agency I don't know enough about Chrons to say if it will DQ you or not.

The Culinary Institute sounds expensive but what type of money can you expect to make if you graduate from the school?

The best person to ask these question too would be the agency your interested in or even the local PD.

    Good Luck

Well i was going to go to the local department tomorrow morning. I am looking to do local. I estimated and figure I will make just as much out of college in culinary arts as I would as a rookie in the local PD. As time goes by the benifits and, forgive me, I forget the word, but the feeling it would give me as an officer outweighs what I would make as a chef.

But thank you for your help.

I think any condition that requires a regimine of 14 pills daily is going to be a HUGE hurdle. Just my opinion.

The bigger issues is that lack of bathrooms while working as a police officer. You see the areas where most officers work? I'd be surprised if you could make it through the medical but stranger things have happened.

I think Crohn's (the real name of the disease) will keep you from becoming a cop. You might check with some depts you might be interested in, but that can be a pretty debilitating disease. The ulcerative colitus on top of it makes it pretty bleak. There are too many healthy applicants and your potential future medical problems aren't something most would want to tolerate. Sorry.
