I live in california and me and my boyfriend are debating something. Is it true a city police officer can not pull you over on the freeway? My boyfriend says only the CHP can do that...

A local police officer can pull you over on the freeway, unless CA is different from any other state I have dealt with. AZ has had a fewlocal police officers, inlcuding a couple of Tempe officers, killed by motorists on our freeways.

Ok, CA is very different from any other state, but it shouldn't be that different.

Likewise, State Patrol can pull you over on a surface street.

A major interstate highway runs through my jurisdiction. It amazes me when people pass me and I am in a MARKED CAR and when I stop them...they say that I cant stop them because I am not a State Trooper.

" Sign here please and the judge accepts payment plans for your fine. "

ANY CA police officer can pull you over and arrest you ANYWHERE in the state. Tell your boyfriend NOT to pull over and see what happens.

I once heard someone ask a CHP officer what his juristiction was while he was affecting an arrest on someone in my city. The CHP officer calmly pointed at his badge and said, "It says CALIFORNIA Highway Patrol doesnt it?".

Chippy humor aside, if you are a peace officer in the state of california you can engage in peace officer duties ANYWHERE in the state.
