ASP baton questions

Have any of you fellow officers had a problem keeping your ASP friction lock batons open in a confrontation, and also do you feel they are effective enough in a confrontation with a suspact hyped up on drugs for example(High Pain Tolerance), or do you feel the PR-24 , or rigid batons are more effective in subdueing an angry individual?

I'll take my expandable over my old PR24 anyday. It works well, takes up less room and the display of expanding it alone has a "presence" factor.

We are looking at switching to ASP because the fact of the matter is most guys dont carry the PR due to its bulk and slinging or unslinging it when entering or exiting the vehicle.

It don't matter if it is pipe, stick, baseball bat, ASP, PR-24 or a walking cane, somebody hyped up on drugs typically does not respond to pain from anything I have hit them with. Each baton has its place. For daily use, the ASP is fine. But if I had to do crowd control, I want a regulary baton.

I carry an ASP in the unit, but I much prefer a PR24 (I carry the expandable one so it's not nearly as bulky). Haven't had problems with either, but each one is more appropriate for different circumstances.

I carry the asp and the straight baton with me always, like Joey said, baton better for crowd control. Its wider, and longer.

Is the ed. of this thread a police or just someone who carries an ASP?

The expandable baton was quite possibly the handiest thing I was ever issued.

I used it to reach high things on shelves at grocery stores, unlock pushbutton door locks, probe beneath car seats for unseen Evidence, and with a piece of tape on the end even rescued a childs balloon from a ceiling with it.

Ohh, and I could perform a Thump Therapy-ostomy with it...

I never liked the APS. You can do must more techniques with a strait baton or PR24 than you can with an APS. If you make contact with any kind of thrusting motion the ASP will collapse. The only advantage I see to them is that you can get in and out of the car without it getting in your way.
