Did you think to ask the department you work for? Your FTO, Sergeant, or other immediate supervisor? What did they tell you?

I doubt it would be a problem to let her shoot it at the range.

I would guess it will be a VERY SERIOUS problem to let her take it out of your presence.

Against the law, probably not, but it might be against your departmental policy. That would vary from dept to dept. When in doubt ask someone in your dept. They'll know.

What happens if you get called into work while she's gone due to an emergency?

    How would you explain that?

Mine would never allow a civilian to use our range unaccompanied. However, I've taken my wife and kids to ours and let them shoot quite a few times. That's where I taught my stepsons gun safety. If something goes haywire, it's my butt though.

No one else finds it odd that an officer, even a new one, does not know if it is "legal" to allow a spouse to shoot his weapon?

I wonder if by "officer" he means security guard?

ok... I figured that It would not be ok to let her take it without me but I was unsure. Thank you to those who did not have a sarcastic remark about my question.. I seem to have a little bit of a hard time with getting the other officers to speak to me.. being that they dont know me.....

This is not asking them for personal information about their lives. Surely you got to know your Training Officer enough to ask him a legal question...

Are you a police officer? If so, look into getting Verified. It's against the TOS for the site to claim to be a Law Enforcement Officer if you are not.

They just handed you a gun with no training? Send a PM to ROS with your info to get verified.

I'm not saying that you aren't telling the truth, but I have never heard of a department issuing a gun to an untrained new hire.

What do you do daily there to get paid? When do you go to the academy?

BTW, my original post was not sarcastic at all; it was dead serious.

Now, I doubt you more. Who can call themselves a "Police Officer" without having gone through the academy or being through FTO? Do you have LEO powers of arrest.

I was hired by an agency who had their own academy and while getting paid to attend for 5 months I was a police cadet, and could have been fired for representing myself to ANYONE as a police officer.

Please tell us your complete situation. I could be wrong...........I'm not, but I could be.

I am not being sarcastic, but YOU need to see your question from our (Verifieds) perspective. As a NEW officer we would think, you would at least know your STATE FIREARMS LAWS, in addition to any and all of your AGENCY's rules and proccedures regarding firearms. Even veteran officers don't forget that kind of information.

I hope you can understand, that someone who comes here and asks a question as you do and states they are the police, immediately draws suspicion. Think about it. Can you blame us?
