    what to do?

Hi, I was curious what you guys might do. Theres a guy in my neighborhood who sells pot out of his house. He's not a big-time dealer but he usually has a bit. I dont want to get into the middle of it, but would like to see him get what is coming to him. Do law enforcement guys take anon. phone calls seriously? Is there another route to take?

There was a time I would've told you that it's typical to want something done but not to want to "get involved" in any way. However, I've come around from that quite some time ago. I have a family and I know I wouldn't want to put them in danger for any reason. They're already in enough simply because of what I do for a living. But I do understand it.

Yes, police take anonymous phone calls and tips. If they want more information, you're free to tell them you'd rather not be involved in name. They'll take it from there, and they may want to talk to you further and keep your name out of it. I will tell you that they most likely already know about your dope-dealing neighbor. Why haven't they hauled him away, you may ask? There are reasons. But don't feel it's because they don't want to do anything. I'm just not going to share them with you is all, no offense.

Most cities have a large number of narcotics complaints. While anonymous complaints are taken seriously, they require more investigative work than a complaint with some leads. If you're going to make an anonymous complaint, be a little more specific than calling up and saying "John Doe is selling drugs at 123 Main Street." If you were to say that, you can bet that the complaint would go to the bottom of the pile in terms of investigative priority.

First, make the complaint by calling the department's narcotics unit and not by calling 911 or the dispachers. Be specific in why you think drugs are being sold at that location. If people are coming and going at different times of the day, try to get descriptions and record tag numbers. If you've actually seen drugs inside the residence, let them know that. Let them know the names of everyone who resides at the house. In short, give them as much information as possible. The more information you give, the more likely the complaint is to be investigated thoroughly instead of a marked patrol car simply being sent to the address to ask the resident if he sells drugs.
