I was asked this morning which of the U.S. States have a law against rolling through a stop sign. I'm assuming the answer is all states but you know what they say about assumption... :p ... so, in an effort to get the answer correct... here I am. :D

Stop simply means stop, not slow down and look. You are correct. That's why they have signs that also say Slow......;)

First, Retired Detective, ;)
I may have sent this twist to your private box.![]()
When I gave your confirmation to the person asking, the question deepened.
Regarding motorcycles, drivers sometimes approach a stop sign and balace a couple/few seconds without putting their feet down and then go. Is this okay and if so, is it the same in all states?
Secondly, the weight of motorcycles here in Tennessee do not trip the traffic lights so after waiting a sufficient amount of time (undisclosed) as long as traffic is clear, they are able to proceed even when the light is red.
Is this the same in all States?
Thank you.

A stop means stop. If someone on a motorcycle can stop w/o putting their feet down and go, then fine. And there are people who can do that. Otherwise, they have to take the time to put their feet down and look. It's not that much inconvenience. And a M/C is plenty heavy enough to trip a traffic light. What happens is people go past them when they stop. It's not weight, it's location, I strongly suspect.
I used to ride M/C and had no problem. I seriously doubt that TN uses a system completely foreign to the rest of the nation. But as I said, what I've done and often seen other riders do is go past the device. They are usually placed about 10 feet or so behind the intersection line and bikes go right up to the line to stop.
Make sense?

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. You may be absolutely right about M/C's missing the Trip. It does make sense to me.
You might be surprised though to learn that the law here in Tennessee does
allow for the circumstance I quoted. I know I was.
Thank you so much. Stay safe.

As already covered, a "STOP" sign means stop, not slow down.
You next question about traffic signals, is completely different than a stop sign.
Down here, it is not the weight of the vehicle that tells the light to change. There are "loops" in the roadway that have a slight electrical field. When that field is interuppted by a metallic object (vehicle) the light knows to change. (It even works for the smalles scooters and mopeds - so it has nothing to do with weight)
As also mentioned bikes, or even cars, miss the loops by either pulling to far forward, or straddling the lanes.
We do not have a law that allows motorcycles to turn left on a red light if the light does not change.
