    Driving on the highway

I've been talking to a lot of friends and other people about a funny thing that seems to happen on highways when there are aren't many cars around. A police car will come up behind the car, and follow for a while real close (sometimes uncomfortably close), even if there is enough room to go around and your the only car on the road. Eventually the police car goes around, the cop stares at the driver as they pass:confused:, and continues on their way. Sometimes the cop has his high beams on while following. A few people I know have sped up while the cop is behind them, and they got pulled over. (I said to them, "tailgating doesn't mean speed up, stupid. it's your fault if you get pulled over.") I've never got pulled over, but this following thng happened once or twice.

What's the deal with this? I've heard this from at least 20 people from NJ down to NC. Is there a logical explaination?

The only time I ever get that close to another car is if I am obtaining the vehicle's license number in order to run a record check for registration/theft info.

It's possible that this is occurring, and when everything comes back in order, the officer moves on.

There are a variety of reasons for it when it's done.

Oh ok, that's probably it. Just, you know, makes one nervous being so close and typing while driving.;)

Gotta get close to read the plate, expiration stickers, see if they're wearing a seatbelt, see if the license plate light is working, or see if there's anything hanging from the rear view mirror.

The look at the driver is to see they're physical description to see if it matches the registration info or to see if the driver appears like they may be intoxicated.

HUGE + 1. I did this the other night and got an expired tag, traffic warrant and no insurance.

OK, makes sense. I'll tell my friends not to freak out. Trust me, I want the uninsured and the fugitives off the road too.

That and to see if the driver is hot or not. :D
