    Tail Light Tint

Hello, I was wondering if you would be able to give me some advice. I live in Minnesota.

I was thinking of tinting my tail lights. From the factory my tails come clear with LED bulbs in a 4 inch circular pattern.

I've tried doing research on this and I've heard that it's legal, but I've also heard it's illegal. A local police man in my area said there is no statute against it but reading online I've heard otherwise. I'm confused as I want to stay safe on the road.

I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

If you really want to stay safe on the road, don't tint your tail lights. Why would you want to do something that would make then harder to see?

I want to do it because it would look better with the theme I have for my car. A mild tint is what I would be going for, not a complete black out.

I'm certain that there is no state that will allow you to tint your tailies anything but red.

Further, they are required to emit a certain intensity, and I am sure that any tinting would reduce the amount of the intensity.

Where's a Traffic guy when you need one... they'll be along shortly, I am sure.

FWIW, tinting your taillights IMHO would be sheer idiocy.

Great....goes with the "theme" of your car. Does the theme of your car include another car ramming you at high speed from behind because they don't see your tinted lights until it is too late to stop?

I have no idea why someone would screw with what amounts to safety equipment on their car. It makes as much sense as removing your airbags in order to put speakers in the space they occupy.

Been there, seen that. Came across a Ford Explorer where the idiot in question had removed the passenger airbag to install a little flatscreen TV.

tail lights need to be visible from a certain distance. Tint would reduce that distance. If it satisfies the distance, it would be legal. Distance is dependent upon state vehicle & traffic law.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.
