    Cash - Money

Are there any legal limits you know of on how much cash a person may carry?

How much cash would a person have to be carrying to encourage you to investigate further?

Would a person with $25,000 cash automatically be arrested until the source could be determined??

There's nothing illegal about carrying cash. If there were other circumstances involved, it might trigger further investigation. If you deposit more than 10K in cash, the bank notifies the IRS.

The person wouldn't necessarily be arrested, however the cash could be "arrested."

Forfeiture laws are a bit complex, however it's safe to say that it's possible for cash to be seized for forfeiture even if nobody is arrested for a crime. It all comes down to the circumstances and the particular situation, however there have been successful forfeiture cases involving currency where there never was an arrest made.

Money could possibly be seized pending investigation of the source. You may have to provide some proof of legitimate income. When I run across someone with dope, a large amount of cash, and no actual job I always seize the money and start asset forfeiture proceedings. If the person is booked I also use an "examination of source of bail" form to force them to show that their bail money came from a legitimate source.

Normal humans don't walk around carrying 25k in cash.

The only legal prohibition (that I can think of off the top of my head) that strictly involves the amount of cash you are carrying, is trying to carry more than $10,000 out of the country without declaring it.

When you see people getting large sums of money seized from them, there is always something else going on that caused it, despite what they or their lawyers later claim in court or the media. That's one thing that most people don't learn about the criminal justice system and the media. The police are not going to go to the newspapers or TV to correct or rebut every accusation made about a seizure, arrest, or anything else.

People who have the facts and law on their side, fight their battles in court. Those who don't, fight their battles in the media.

I don't have a problem with it, you occcasionally come across little old men that are carrying their life savings with them or have it stuffed in a mattress.

However, if it's one of those "these aren't my pants, man" type of situations then it's going to get interesting. :D
Don't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.
