Merging (lane ends)

Good morning

I am just having a discussion about a certain scenario and thought you might be able to shed some light on the answer. We are talking about a set of lights where about a block ahead the right hand lane ends.

I am just wondering what the law is in this case, for merging over. Is it only up to the right hand land to move over, or is it the responsibility of both the right and left hand lanes to make room (and match speed). From what I have read elsewhere, it seems that in a merging situation both drivers have the responsibility to merge, and not just the traffic that is doing the merging. I just want to know if in this case the same rule applies.

Here in NY at least where I am at the sign indicating the merge will show which lane is ending. That person has the responsibility to yield while merging.

Anytime a driver is leaving their lane and entering a new lane, that driver is responsible to yield to traffic already present in the new lane, regardless of circumstance.

Both drivers in both lanes, the one ending and the one continuing have an obligation to drive safely and avoid colliding with other vehicles. The car in the lane ending however has to yield while merging.

Here comes the rant:

You can see the signs - whether it's an established merge, or a temporary one due to contruction, you know it's coming loooooong before you get there. Why, oh why do you have to ride the lane all the way to its end and then expect people to be happy to let you in in front of them, especially when THEY took the time to heed the signs and got over early. :mad:

Signs will indicate which lane is ending/merging. That lane is the one that does not have the right of way and has to yield.
