Howdy all,
As some of you know, I'm in the applicant process for a large midwest department. Part of the background packet concerns the arrest records of immediate family members. You know, you think you know your family until you have to complete a background packet for a police deparment. Turns out ALL of my siblings (3 of them) have been hauled in at some point in their lives. Since I am the oldest child and live out-of-town, no one bothered to inform me.
What I want to ask all of you concerns my youngest brother who was hauled in for malicious destruction of property at the age of 15 (tire slashing and vandalism). Getting him to talk about this was incredibly difficult, and both he and my parents are concerned that when I list this on the background packet, it will somehow create a new record on a crime that has been "expunged" as a juvenile offense.
I've never heard of anything like this being done and I tried to reassure them that the department is interested in me and not so much my younger brother. Have any of you had to deal with a family member arrested as a juvenile? Did your record of their offense on your background packet cause any additional follow-up from the department with that family member?
Yes, I do plan to ask the police department what they normally do with the info, but was curious to know what other departments do.
And no, I have no arrest record.
