    Department primary and bug weapon?

I would like to ask if your department allowed you to carry a weapon of your choice as your primary weapon what would it be.

Would you guys mind telling me what your primary weapon currently is?

EDIT.. What is your bug gun, AKA back up weapon..

I know my local police department issues a Glock 22 with ns and a 27 with ns as back up to each officer.

according to the news Atlanta police just replaced 4 year old S&W 4006 that fell apart with new M&P 40s. Dekalb police last year or so replaced their Beretta 92fs with the same thing or 96, what ever it is it’s still a 9mm. Roswell police just got Glock 22 after trading in their Beretta 92fs.

I have a question for a mod or the person who runs this web page and would like to ask it in a pm, can someone pm me please.

I am not a cop and never been a cop.

FYI, and to save you the trouble of asking me if this is for a school report or research work, it is not, it's just me being curious.

I hate weddings cause old people always poke you and say, "You're next!" So I started doing that crap to them at funerals.

The bug weapon I normally use is a can of Deep Woods OFF, 'cuz skeeters is hard to hit, even with a .22.

Nice reply, but I think you know what I meant sir.

I don't think the title, Department primary and back up weapon? would of fit.

Carrying your weapon of choice isn't a good idea. IMHO

    1. Training. You should be familiar with your gun and not have to pick up an unfamiliar gun frm another officer ( and not know how it works).

    2. Liability. If you carry YOUR gun , I think YOUR liability increases. I'll always carry the dept issue gun, no matter what.

    3. Maintenance. I dont want to buy or maintain my own gun. I want them to buy it and maintain it.

We all carry Glocks. I was allowed to choose a Model 23 , even though most have a Model 22. I am quite used to NOT having an external safety and don't want to have to try to find one in a hurry.

My dept issues Sigs. Most people get a 226 unless the firearm is too large then they may get a 229. You can buy your own 226/229/220 and choose from 9mm/.40/.45 acp. Most people just carry a 226 .40 because cops are pretty cheap in general.

For a backup you can carry any primary weapon (listed above) or just about any S&W .38 revolver. I carry a S&W 340PD.

NYPD for their duty weapon currently has a choice of 3 different 9mm all with the same capacity (sig, glock, smith). When I was going through we had the choice of 4 different off duty 9mm (2 dif smiths, glock, kahr), but they have since done away with the kahr for some reason. Don't know if they've replaced it. I have glocks because the magazines are interchangable, and they're easily concealable.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Mine issues Glock 17 (9mm). We used to have a choice between it or the Model 21 (.45), but we had a couple of the .45's went kaboom on the range so they discontinued them.... That's too bad, I always preferred the .45. I'd rather be sued by the estate of the person I shot than the person.

There is no policy on BUG's at all, but you have to qualify with it as you would with an off duty weapon. I don't think many on my old dept carry them. If someone gets your duty weapon, you probably aren't going to have time to get it out anyway. I assume those that do carry a 9mm of some kind so they can at least use the same ammo.

If I had to have only one gun, it would be a 1911 in 45acp. I would prefer a steel gun for duty use and a alloy frame compact or officers model for BUG or off duty. Come to think of it, a 5 shoot chief would do for a BUG.

My agency has gone back and forth during my tenure, usually issung Sigs or Glocks. My issue guns over the years have been Glock 17, Glock 19, Sig 228, Sig 226 and finally a Glock 22. My backup gun, (Personally owned) since 1994, has been a Sig 239 in 9mm, about the biggest gun I can carry and still conceal wherever I want.

We don't have an option for duty weapon; in uniform it's a Glock 31 .357. Off duty or plain clothes it's a Glock 33, same calibre. We can carry a back-up of our choosing, pending department approval.
