Friends that occassionally use?

I was wondering how the officers on this forum have dealt with having friends that occassionally smoke MJ, or basically didn't think what they did around you could effect your own chances for becoming a police officer.
I am still in college, I live there, and I'm wondering what to do if any of my roommates attempt to "light up" in the dorm. Theres one that frequently smokes, but none of us are close with him (5 of us total)
I used to smoke very rarely over a short period and have quit for good as to not compromise my future. But being around pot smokers could still compromise it! I'm already in a bad spot, how did you all deal with your friends? if you had this problem at all... i hope im not alone

You have to decide if your career is worth being friends with a criminal.

Once you decide, you'll know how to handle yourself.

Other than traffic offenses (speeding, etc), associating with anyone involved in criminal activity will make it very difficult for you to get any kind of job in law enforcement, or even any job with the government in general where they will conduct a background check. Your friends are hurting their own future and yours, even if you don't use.

If you care about your future...you wont hang with them.

If they cared about your future...they wouldn't do it around you.

You can't tell them to quit because drug users have every excuse in the book about why it is okay to do drugs. You'll have to find new friends. But, for info, once you are a cop they won't want to hang out with you. But the good thing is, you won't want to hang out with them either after dealing with a few thousand doper turdbirds.

As Leogate said, they aren't going to care enough about you to quit. You have to do whatever it takes to clean up your act and start associating with people who don't break the law. If you don't see that as obvious, think about another career. The solution isn't that hard, I would think....:rolleyes:

Some of the questions I see asked here makes me wonder if the people have the common sense to be police officers. I would think most people would understand the concept that you can't hang out with people smoking dope and have any expectation that you will be hired by anybody as a police officer.

Like others have already said. You have to decide, what is more important; your career or your friends. I don’t know and I won’t even estimate a guess at how many of us have had to make this decision, but I am one of them. I choose my career. In fact the only thing that comes before my career is my daughter. I tossed 10+ year old friendships, because I will not even stand the chance of being put in the situation of jeopardizing my job. I don’t care how “recreational” the usage, it’s still illegal and all it takes is one time of being in the wrong place at the wrong time to kill any and all chances you have of be coming an officer.

And, I know it will sound rough, but I can't think of one person I knew in high school or college who was a big marijuana smoker who really turned out to be someone I wanted to hang out with.

One of my best friends in high school, became a huge marijuana smoker in college, but still got a master's degree, and his wife (also a mj smoker) went to medical school and became a doctor. I used to think of them as the exception to the rule, until he called me about a month ago, told me that he, his wife, and his two teenage daughters are all addicted to hydrocodone, his wife was in the addicted physicians program, and was about to lose her medical license, they had lost their million dollar home and everything they owned, and they were getting a divorce, and could I give him any advice on what to do besides killing himself.

And, yet no matter how many times this type of story is told, people still think it's not a big deal to play around with something that will ruin your life if you give it the slightest chance.
