    Music in your patrol car?

I've been a ride a long in 2 different police cars. Washington, D.C. and P.G. County (MD) police, both of those departments had no (am/fm) radios in them. I asked and the 2 cops I rode with said that thier policy would not allow it. Here in Delaware I was in a State Trooper car and the trooper had the radio blaring. If it were some Lynyrd Skynyrd (yes I am old) I might have enjoyed it, but it was some Gansta Rap Crap that I hate. Is Delaware alone in allowing it's patrol cars to play music? This trooper had the music soo loud there is no way that he could have heard his police radio if there was an emergency somewhere. I can understand the no radio policy of DC and PG police depts.

If he was a Trooper he probably wasn't expecting an emergency that month.

Just kidding all you Troops don't get excited.

If I had rap playing in my car I'd probably aim for the next tree to put myself out of my misery. Last I heard, Michigan State Police didn't allow radio's either. They may have changed it by now, this was about ten years ago.

I think it costs more to get the car without a the radio than to just get AM/FM. No department will allow it's officers to ignore the police radio, but it greatly varies as far as music is concerned. I try to keep it to a mininum, to protect my hearing. The car is noisy enough as it is.

I guess that makes sense, In trucking years ago, all trucks had hoods, when they started making COE's better known as Cabovers they charged more for not having the hood. Once all the BIG companies bought COE's they charged more for Conventionals (hoods) I guess it is a supply and demand thing.

Thanks for answering my question so quick!:D

For years, police dept bought them w/o radios, but not only was the car harder to buy w/o a radio, the resale value was less. Even though cab companies buy most of our old cars and rebuild them, the cabbies wanted a radio to listen to.

After a while, you can filter out just about everything going on and hear your car number or someone broadcast an emergency.

Ours have radios w/ CD players. I have my Zune playing the whole time. It's low enough for me to hear what I need to. When working, I usually have my portable on my vest carrier too... and from the remote mic, I usually run an ear bud, so it's hard to miss any traffic (even with the radio blaring).

When I was bringing a lovely "gangster" back to the station-house or to central booking I would always play some lovely classical music for them. They HATED it.

People always had the tendency to walk in front of the radio car too causing me to slam on the brakes when I was transporting a perp who was running his/her mouth. Kind of ironic

My department pulls the radios out of the patrol cars, but mine happens to be an older car that still has a radio. I usually hook up my Ipod to listen to while working.

I've found that gangsters especially love country music. (The song 'I fought the law and the law won' is also a popular piece of music).

I guess I should have explained myself better, I got drunk (very rare) at my birthday party. I'm not roudy when I get drunk, I usually sit and the corner and talk to myself. The people I was with got rowdy and the police were called. I was clean and clear of it all till the bartender told the police I was with them. They came to me and was asking me questions. They say I told them I wanted to kill myself so they transported me to the hospital. I sat there until the alcohol wore off. The state trooper then transported me to a nuthouse for evaluation. If I closed my eyes and listen to him I would think I was talking with a black man, looking at him he looked like Opie so I don't think he was trying to annoy me, I think that's his kind of music.
Anyway thanks for your imput. I was just wondering. I know while driving my big rig, if I had to listen to the CB radio all day it would drivve me nuts. I've got a Sirius radio plus an Ipod I use religiously. A mix of Classic Rock and Comedy Channels soothes me.

My agency paid extra to have radios removed from their cars... back in the early 80's...

Since 1983, they always had at least AM radios, and my last issued vehicle came standard with a cassette. It was a 2000 Expedition.

I on occasion do the following.

drive through ghetto apartment complexes blaring rap music

or pull up next to thugs and blare rap music.

usually gets a few laughs. but i always make sure i can answer calls. its never up for more than a few seconds.

occasionally ill lean way back with one hand on the wheel and give them the "nod".

hahaha. ok part that never happens

I should add that I have heard Supervisors, on several occasions over the years admonish their charges both over the air and in squad meetings about having their radio too loud where it could be heard over the primary.

Hell, I remember hearing a dispatcher or two told to turn down VH1 or MTV in the background. ;)

On my first issued cruiser, a 1980(?) Malibu, the radios had been removed and the siren box inserted there. I was glad that I bought a little "pre-boom" box, because I mounted it behind my head with a bunji, since the headrest was missing for some reason... a few months later I was rear-ended by a suspended, uninsured idiot. It totalled out the radio, but I didn't impact the cage because it was there, and the speaker cone was exactly the right size for my noggin.

    Not a scratch.:D

It was enough damage to the "then" 5 year old car that they didn't fix it and they sold it with the rear end high in the air and the bumper dragging on the ground.
