LE was the first time I handled a weapon. The first day, I could not pull the slide back. Boy was I nervous. Fortunately, you get lots of practice in the academy and I have remarkably improved. I try to do some off duty shooting, but if you have never shot before, just pay attention to what the intructors tell you. Newbs are their speciality.

TCLEOSE (Texas) requires yearly re-qualification. My agency requires it quarterly. We have numerical scoring, but I believe TCLEOSE only gets a "pass/fail" report. I honestly can't remember if they get the actual score or not. Ours is scored on a scale up to 250 with 180 required to pass.

Every agency has their small portion of folks that don't do too well. They pass, but just barely. By and large we all do pretty well, but do a LOT of tac training in addition to the quarterly quals.

And the lower scorers get ribbed with to their face, a lot

When I worked uniform, I practiced quite a bit. After I became a detective, I didn't, but I don't do much tactical stuff except when I worked dope. The times I came close to shooting someone, I was less than 7 yards away from them. At that range, I can throw the gun and hit them in the forehead.....

Most shooting exchanges occur between 3 and 5 yards. Like retdetsgt said, you could pretty much throw the gun at them. Lots of other things come into play though and it's not as easy and forthright as it sounds.

Right, that is how it is done with us.

We qualify out to fifty yards, but if you look at our shooting reports, almost all are within five yards (and many are contact shots). Go figure.

In my agency we qual quarterly. We also have a night time qual we have to do in low light (darkness). At my station we qual on the HK p2000, M4, 870, and the UMP40. I feel that if we have it in the gun room everyone should be trained on it. I want to know that if I get killed, who ever is with me can pick up what I was carrying and operate it.

As for those that fail to qual getting ribbed... Of course and it can get pretty brutal. However it is a lot worse on those that score low then those that fail qual. I guess they don't want to be to mean to the failures.
