How much of a notice did you have before you started the academy?

I am 10 months into the hiring process with my city's pd. The process included the usual, entry test, poly, background, physical, medical etc.. I have passed every step in this process and the last step was the psych exam. After the psych exam is when they are supposed to notify you when you start the academy. Now I have heard so many different stories about many officers who had short notice before they were told to report, i have heard two weeks prior and as little as two days. Well my psych exam was about 2 months ago and the academy starts next month. They told us not to ask for our psych results and im just waiting and nervous. So im not even 100% sure i even passed. Im just wondering is this normal, and for departments who have a similar process, how close to the start date were told you had the job and were to report to the academy?

I was substituted into my 9 week Academy for a guy who's wife was pregnant and due at any time on a Friday and the class started on Monday... of course I'd been already working for 8 months.

Each Agencies policies for these things is going to be different, so you should really specify your location and Agency.

Columbus division of police, OH. They hire you and then put you through the academy at the starting salary. I figured many larger departments do the same or similar.

3 weeks and I had to move across the state.

2 weeks for hiring. 2 1/2 more weeks until the academy.

1 month between finding out I was hired and the start of my academy. In that month I had to get married and move 50 miles

Two weeks for me. My first official day as a city employee was the first day of the academy

All depends on if the department has their own academy or if they send their officers to a state academy. Our officers go through the state academy. When I was hired, the next basic school was two weeks away :eek:

Now we hire in batches, anywhere from 6 to 12 people at a time. They're sent directly to the state academy the following Monday after they are hired on Thursday. I believe they are told when the academy starts so it depends on amount of time between all the results are in and the start date. I believe they try to get it wrapped up in plenty of time for the new people to give notice to employers, etc. We have to reserve spots in the state academy so it's never rushed.

They pay for the first 6 months while recruits are in training isn't great, but it goes up 5 or 6K a year when it's over.

I got 2.5 weeks notice. Just enough to quit the job I was working with class. I can't imagine those that had to move.
