Is there a certain reason why alot of these are done on such a short notice? Is it to test committement or something, or to add to the stress level you will face in the academy?

I think it has more to do with the fact that many departments do much more than hire and process new recruits. Most (actually, I'd argue that ALL departments with more than 10 or so officers) have an entire department worth of people, resources and divisions to operate, and you - the new hires - are one small piece of the pie. I doubt a department gives short notice to "add to the stress" as the academy does a fine job of giving you what you need (at least they do in my home state). You need to realize that in law enforcement, you come in as the "low man on the totem pole" and have to earn your way to being equal. It's not granted to you from Day 1.![]()

I was notified that I was in the window for the academy with about two months prior to academy start.
I had been in the hiring process for about eight months when I got that news.

I received 1 1/2 weeks notice.
I got exactly 14 days of notice prior to starting the academy.

IIRC, 10 days after a 14 month wait...
I think I had 8 or 9 days notice.
Thanks for the responses. It has now been 2 solid months since I have heard anything from the department. So would you guys say its a good thing when you dont hear anything for awhile? And for you guys with such short notice, like a week or under.. was there even an orientation or something for the academy before you started?
In my federal agency, I am embarrassed to say that our hiring department and hiring process is so screwed up, that people are frequently called up on Friday, to see if they can report to a class starting on Sunday.
There is no excuse for it, but it has gone on for many years now.
