    Question Police issued firearms

I am currently a civilian in IN. I am seriously considering a career in law enforcement but I will admit that before this year I never saw this coming. But I am wondering about so many things right now. How long does training take, what are the requirements, what is the pay, how do partners work, what kind of weapons and firearms are issued and what hours are. I am a 21 year old male and I have had 2 speeding tickets and one DWI which was completly and accident. How many people say that right? But I was wondering if this would effect my eligibility or if I would have to take some boring desk job.

Speeding tickets won't look good, but that one's a small hurdle. You've got bigger problems.

With a DWI conviction you'll need a solid 8 to 10 years between the time you committed the offense to the time you start applying to agencies (sworn or not). Some may not even hire you at all, depending on the department's regulations.

I'm not going to bother answering the rest of you post: 1) because it's searchable, not just here but everywhere else; 2) I don't think you'll need to be worrying about any of that anyway with that DWI for quite some time.

Best of luck to you in your quest for a career.

Edit to Add: There was a DWI in my home area a few nights ago. Some lady drove the wrong way up the turnpike for five miles before hitting a limo head on - killing the driver and a 12 year old boy. She blew a .19 brac. "It was just an accident." So, see if no one on here cares if it's an accident of not. It was your judgement that put you in that sitution.

    Thanks

Thank you very much. I was really hoping for a career in law enforcement but maybe i will just have to search for another way to serve the community. Thanks for the help.

The above answer to an honest respected response is exactly how this kind of post should always be.

GenPapi, you are such a rare person for your age (who I'm going to assume was raised halfway decent).;)

If you give it some time (as has been suggested) and you still want to be a LEO, it will happen. Until then, get your degree/s out of the way. Start a career in something you enjoy and be as successful as possible. You will be a little older and a bit wiser when the time comes to apply. Yeah the DWI will still come up later but there have history to show that it was a "one time" mistake.

    Good Luck Dude!!!:D

You want a good way to both help the community and raise your chances for getting a police job? Join the military. In addition to that the military will help pay for college so you can get that under your belt. By the time your military service and college are done, you will A) put enough time in between your DUI and applying and B) put enough good things on your resume to cancel out that bad decision

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

An amateur will train until they get it right. A professional will train until they can't get it wrong.

    Yes sir

Seriously thanks for all the advice and yeah you know I was raised right.Been around strict enforcement of rules since the day I met my parents.
I will say though it is a good idea the education is not an option for me as there is a "shortage" in funding.Im a ghetto boy and proud of it but that don't put money in the bank.

But am now thinking about military careers as my next choice.
