What's your departments policy on gambling?

Obviously, I doubt your department would be okay with one of their officers have a serious gambling problem. But what about occasional weekend visits to a casino with some friends, a friendly poker game, office NCAA Tournament pools, a vacation to Las Vegas, a 50 dollar bet on the Super Bowl, etc?

Also.. in terms of getting hired, what kinds of gambling habits could disqualify you? I'm a college students who plays a weekly 5 dollar poker game with my buddies and visits a casino and blows 20 bucks maybe once every 2 months, if that.

These questions probably make it sounds like I'm some kind of gambling freak who wants to make sure I can still gamble if I'm a police officer, but that's not it at all. I wouldn't shed a tear if I had to give up my weekly poker games. It's simply a matter of curiosity.

As always, thanks for the answering my question!

My agency has general prohibitions against anything which could bring discredit upon the Service; becoming a degenerate gambler would likely fall under that.

Accruing excessive gambling markers (or any unmanaged debt, for that matter) could jeopardize my TS clearance.

As far as the examples you gave, my job couldn't care less.

You may find that departments are more concerned with gambling while doing a pre-hire background investigation, because of what excessive wagering says about your character. But lottery tickets and poker night with the boys don't strike me as excessive.

The poker night is no problem in my department, as the Sgt's are the ones who host most of them!

They do, however, have a problem with me buying a lotto ticket at the stop-n-rob while on duty and picking up a cup of coffee in uniform. I don't understand it, but as I am not the Sgt., I just follow orders and only buy them in civvies.

All I can say is that we are not allowed to go to a Casino (even going to the bar or restaurant is a no no here ....).

This is where it gets tricky though. Technically, NCAA Tournament Pools and house poker games are illegal when money is involved.

Now, I haven't seen any office pool police raids lately but it's still illegal...
