    Question for BIs

Is it feasible to ask a BI to hold off contacting your current employer until after your probationary period is over?

    The reason I ask:

I am relocating from NYC to the midwest to support my wife in pursuit of her PhD. We are returning to a state we both grew up in and consider home. I have always been interested in working for the local PD there and I am heading down for the physical and written test in 4 weeks.

Knowing the hiring process will take 8-12 months, I need to find a "regular job" to support the family while I'm in process. My wife will not be working in lieu of receiving a stipend from the university. We return at the end of June, and if I pass my initial testing phase, the BI will begin the background check and contact current and former employers. Needless to say, I'm nervous about my new employer discovering that I have applied to work for the PD while I am still in the probationary time period (90 days).

I have no issues with past employers, and will no doubt get a great refernce from my current employer here in New York.

I'm sure more than a few BIs on this board have encountered applicants in my position, and I would like to know what happened in similar circumstances.

The option to hold off on my application until after my probationary period is an option I considered. However, I really want to work with this dept, they only host one academy per year, and I would much rather begin the academy at 34 than 35.

That's really an issue only your BI can answer. I had to as a BI to hold off on doing an interview of a past employer, which held up by BI from being completed, but I had a valid reason and my BI was accommodating. Reach out to him/her and tell him your situation. No guarantees, but 90 days doesn't seem like too long. Worst he'll say is that you have to apply again.

ROS is right. It will be up to your individual BI whether he can and/or wants to accomodate you. They can only say yes or no.

Our BI's don't have the option to give you a choice. If you want to be considered for the job we can either contact your employer or you have to remove yourself from consideration. About as much as they allow us to do, is hold off a day or two so you can talk to your employer.
