As usual long winded, but thought I would share my experience in this matter...
While waiting to join my first dept I met my wife.
We dated for a while and when I started at the Academy she moved to that state with me. She has no involvement with Police before me and knew very little about it.
Because she has been with me through it all, and because she is not involved in it, she is just perfect for me. Because I studied throughout the Academy with her (she would pop quiz me each weekend for the upcoming week's exams) she has a good understanding of my job, but is still detached from it enough for me to vent to.
We discussed early in our relationship how much she wanted to know about my job and she decided she wanted to know everything so that if she ever gets a call that I have been injured or worst then it won't be such a shock.
She is my rock and I would be lost without her.
When I had my first death she was there to listen to me rant and rave.
More recently it sank in a bit more to her that the job has some serious dangers. I had a firearms incident that nearly resulted in me shooting someone or getting shot. As close to a shooting as it gets, after a lengthy pursuit. This was about two years ago. i only found out last week that she emailed her sister and told her that it was a real reality check that what I did was dangerous. she never told me because she didn't want me to worry about her while I was out doing what I do.
Our relationship might be unique, but I reckon it is perfect. She is that check I need to make me realise that there is life outside the job, while still having enough of an appreciation of my work to be there for me as support when i need it.
I still remember the first time she referred to the caged vehicle as just "the cage" (police talk). I didn't realise until then that she took that much notice of what I said about work.
