    assult charge

Hello my name is Ryan, and i live in troy ohio. I want to become a police officer within the next year or so, but last year i was involved in a physical altercation with someone at a bar, i was not arested, but i was charged with assault. I hired an attorney and got my charge reduced to a disorderly conduct.

Last week i put in a request for a ride along and was denied.
Will this hurt my chances of ever becoming a police officer?

Well, it sure won't help when you're applying against others with a clean record. You'll have to put some time in between the offense and the time you apply. It probably won't be an automatic DQ though.

Piggy's right. It isn't a dealbreaker, but you steepened the hill which must be climbed by a significant amount.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Being denied for a ride-a-long is not a good sign.

not even if you had it expunged.

Not really, a background investigator is going to look at your actions. That will be taken into account more than the outcome of the court case.

You just have to hope that you can satisfactorily explain the charge to your BI. Even if you are successful, you will be completing for a slot with people that have no such blemish on their record.

Only you can determine whether it's worth the risk.

Look at this from an outside perspective, just based on the information you posted, you need to ask yourself this question: if a department denies you the ability to do a ride-along, why do you think they would vest even more trust in you and hire you as an officer? Not trying to be rude, but that is probably the perspective a hiring agency would have.

I've thought about that too, but even though i was denied, the officer that i spoke with said that the charge was just to fresh, and to come back in about six month to try again. I guess thats a good sign. I'll just use the time to my advantedge, and study more for school. The way that i see it is that if it came down to me and one other guy for the job, the other guy mite be a saint, but just could bomb on the interview. Just like citicop said ''time is your friend'' I will not give up.

Thanks for all the info guys!!

Alcohol related problems in your background is never good on any PD but with some time you will be able to show you have learned and all that and you'll be fine.
