Would you be terminated in this situation?

Lets say you was single and you met a woman who was married, however; she was planning on getting a divorce but at the point had not told her husband of this, but throughout her marriage had told him that one day she would leave if he didnt get his act together. Within a couple of weeks of the 2 of you seeing each other she tells her husband she is going to file for divorce. They are not currently living together when you meet them. Well, the guy finds out about you and that you are a police officer. He goes to your department and tells the department that you are dating his wife. Would the department just look at him and laugh, or would they suspend you, or worse fire you.

No, personal time is personal. If it does not break the law, then I would not be hassled at work for it.

Dating a woman who's married means you're stupid but it's not against the law.

Yes you could be here. Working for a Sheriff you work at his will and I have seen people let go because of things they did in there personal lives on there personal time. Some Sheriffs view your actions on and off duty as a reflection on there department.

On my Department they could take disciplinary action against you. I don't know that they would, but they could. We had a standard of conduct that included off-duty behavior.

However, most officers that got into trouble under this lied during the investigation, and were disciplined for that.

Thirty years ago, on my old department, you would have been ordered to cease the relationship or face discipline with the possibility of termination.

Arizona had a couple of laws on the books back then, Adultery, as well as Open and Notorious Cohabitation, that may not have enforced against the public, but law enforcement officers were held to a higher standard of conduct.

If you were single, you were committing adultery if you engaged in a sexual relationship with a married subject, even if they were separated. If you were married, you were committing adultery even if your partner was single.

Regarding Open and Notorious Cohabitation, you could not reside with a person of the opposite sex, even if both of you were single. No “shacking up” for the cops.

This has all changed as “society ethics” have relaxed.

I do not think there would be an issue with it, now, unless one of the parties complained and the activity was found to be damaging to the reputation and public trust of the Sheriff's Office; a catch-all regulation.

I will probably be looked upon as an old fashioned one-way fart, by some, but I enjoyed the tighter ethical standards of the “old days” and think we (LEO’s) have been damaged by relaxation of the strict Code of Conduct we were once held accountable for.

I see so much trouble with internal relationships and bed hopping that you never observed back when I was a rookie.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

I've seen people disciplined for it and I've seen people terminated for it. I've also seen nothing at all happen. It really varies. Many agencies have written policies regarding this as well.

Dating and or living with a person who is still married is ASKING for problems. The " illegality " of such imoral living has dimmed with the liberal times we have come to know so the chances of being disciplined are minimal if anything at all.

There is nothing worse than going to domestic calls , but is is worse if you are invloved in said call. Unless and until the other party actually DOES get divorced , you are just waiting and asking for trouble. And cops don't need trouble.

NYS Penal Law has an adultery statute on the books.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Dating a married person is bad joojoo (i mean, who wants to date a cheater anyway??). In my corner of the planet, yes disciplinary action up to and including termination is possible.

We could get disciplined for it. Fired? Probably not. While in this state adultery is illegal, an A mis I believe, it only applies to the spouse not the outside party. Plus the other spouse has to be the one to file charges.
