    I messed up.

    Hello,

I turned 18 today and made a big mistake of stealing from walmart. I know it wasn't right and I still don't know why I did it. I was just informed that they waited until today so that I could be fully prosecuted. So I am sure the police will probably be here soon. I just wanted to ask what kind of time/charges I am going to face if anyone could give me a general idea. I live in Oklahoma. Please don't bash me because I did something so stupid.. I already know it was wrong and I am beating myself up over it bad. I was suppose to swear in for the navy sunday, but i'm guessing this will ruin my chances for that as well. I took a $400.00 item.. Any ideas? Suggestions? thanks..

Oh yeah.. and I worked there.. so that's how they know where I live.

$400.00 theft in PA, retail theft is an automatic trip to the Greybar Hotel, the Hoosegow, the Pokey you see.

That was dumb and will possible follow you for the rest of your life.

You say they waited until today to be prosecuted, does that mean they stopped you when you were 17 and they waited to call police till you turned 18? Doesnt matter, you stole as a juvenile. Dont let anyone scare you BUT it is not going to be easy
If you were 18 when u stole then you will be prosecuted as an adult.
"Det. Tim Bayliss: You never say please. You never say thank you.
Det. Frank Pembleton: Please don't be an idiot. Thank you. "

" From the tracks on his arms, large caliber wound, proximity to a heroin market... I'd say it was a heated dispute about the symbolism of red and blue in 18th-century French romantic poetry"

I know it was dumb, I am very disappointed in myself. At the same time I can understand why you would say that. They didn't stop me when I was 17.. they held the camera evidence until then. Some of my good friends told me they was waiting on me and so I didn't go back. Will I be prosecuted as a juvenile if it was a few weeks before I turned 18?

Also, thank you for replying in a timely manner I appreciate it.

    1. Speak with an attorney.

    2. Call your recruiter NOW (do not let him find out from someone else - and don't think he won't find out).

    3. Stop calling it "dumb", a "mess up", a mistake, etc. Calling it dumb and stupid is merely stating the obvious. It was a criminal act that you committed intentionally and for which you will have to answer and face the consequences. Here, let me help you: "What I did clearly represents a character flaw in myself. It was a selfish and inexcusable act. I will face the consequences of what I have done and take every step necessary to correct this behavior. I am now a thief, and I will do the hard work in the coming years that is required to establish a reputation of honesty and integrity. Only after having done that will I be able to look back and reference this as an indiscretion of youth. I realize that I cannot say that right now."

You're an adult now, so start acting like it. The military is a VERY good thing for you right now.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you just said. I just got off the phone with my recruiter right before I read this. Thank you for your reply.

17 or 18, your not a juvenile in Texas. You go to big boy jail.

You'd still be prosecuted as a juvenile here since it happened at 17. However, anything over 200 bucks here makes it a felony. Even if it happened at 17, you'd still be a convicted felon which will seriously hamper you in the future

Damn I wish we could be more like Texas.

So youre an employee, well there are two sides to every story on this job, and hopefully there aint (TX talk) more than what is here, for example there is, and you could be facing say burglary.

We all make mistakes, learn and move on...ditto--military is good.

In Washington State, you stole a felony amount....Theft 2nd Degree (Amount $250 to $1499.99). If it was only a couple months before your eighteenth birthday, then the charges would most likely be filed as adult.

I hate thieves. But in our courts felony thefts are treated pretty mild unless you have many others. Did I mention I hate thieves? The Navy will probably be okay if you tell them a head of time and get all the court mandated things out of the way before you ship out. Thieves suck. The main thing is that you get it taken care of as soon as possible. I would definately get a lawyer. I hate thieves...shoplifters I can deal with, but people that steal from people I can't stand.

A thief is a thief is a .... well, you get the point.

I won't continue on the "shoplifters I can deal with" bit because I'll jump up on a soapbox. Those things have a habit of falling out from underneath you anyway
