i just have a question i am trying to get help for some thoughts that i have been having about well suicide. i have tried calling suicide hot line, and well they were not much help i was e-mailing a police officer but all he did was call the crisis line. i feel like i am running out of options and well the question is if i told a police officer that i was suicidal, would they arrest me i don't want that. i just would like to know how an officer might respond.

This is not something a police officer can help you with. You need professional counseling with a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Although I agree with ROS, this is not a police issue, but to answer your question how my particular department would handle this is, you would not be arrested, but rather, you would be taken to see a doctor by us for evaluation. There is no criminal charge for feeling this way. Like I said, you need to talk with a doctor.

Yup... same here. We would take you into custody for a study (72 hrs) to evaluate the risk of threat to yoruself and others. In that study, doctors determine how to proceed. There would be no arrest.

Baltimore County Crisis Response System: 410-931-2214

That number is good 24/7. They have mobile, in-home response teams to come to YOU. That way you don't have to worry about not knowing Baltimore very well.

Baltimore Grassroots Crisis Intervention: 410-531-6677 or 1-800-422-0009

That is also good 24/7, and they will be able to connect you with help.

Also, remember you have 911 at any time.

We cannot provide you with the help you need on this forum. All that we can do is provide you with the resources and contact information and wish you the best. Please pick up your phone and call any of those numbers.

I must say that I do not live in Baltimore. I found that information on the web. You can call your local police department and get any information you need as well. People are available to help you.

I agree with Snapshawt...I think your feelings based upon what is going on in your life. And if it seems lke more than you can handle, some people tend to think suicide is the answer. It isn't.

EVERYONE has such feelings like being out of control or going through BAD times in their lives. Even cops do. I have been to see my pastor twice in the past month adn have another appointment to go back because he has the expertise and experience to help me deal with some personal issues that I dont have.

I can write a bangup accident report or a top notch DUI report but I am not a counselor and know when I need to ask for or get help.

Please allow yourself the opportuinty to call someone and let someone new talk to you. If you were in my district, I would NOT arrest you, I would find someone for you to talk to who understands the life issues that you face.

You are NOT the first person to have personal problems and you will not be the last. Let someone who is good at what they do , who knows how to help....help you.

You will feel better about yourself and we will feel better for allowing us to even help you a little. You have a lot of life left and try to see beyond the bad times to better times that are ahead.

    I'll pray for you.

Cops handle emotional problems when its an immediate threat on life, and then we drop you off at the psych ER. If you have depression/etc, then get a mental health professional of some type (psychologist/psychiatrist/social worker/etc). If you feel as if you want to end it all right now, then call 911, and they'll send a cop, and an ambulance, and they'll force you to go to the hospital.

I wouldn't worry about being arrested, first off like everyone has said, it's not illegal to have those thoughts so you won't be. Secondly even if they were to arrest you at least you'd be getting help. No matter what, you are aware that you need help and that's part of the battle right there. Get help, no matter what.

Judging from your posts and your profile, I take it that you're about 22 - 23 years old, a married mother who doesn't work. You stay at home to raise your 2 yr old child. You haven't mentioned anything that leads one to view your life as a hopeless existence (ex: living alone under a highway bridge while being infected with a terminal disease). Instead, your profile seems to paint a picture of you having a family and a child, all of which should be giving you a hopeful existence.

I'm certainly no psychology expert, but like I said before, you should reach out to counseling from those who are. If you have a loving family and still have thoughts of suicide, you probably have depression or some severe medical illness. Law enforcement cannot prescribe medication to deal with chemical imbalances (and I've seen first hand how much medication can positively affect someone with a true medical imbalance), which it sounds like you may have.

someone who has emotional problems will absolutley NOT be arrested for thoughts of suicide, etc. We arrest people for crimes. If you harm someone, and then claim it was due to mental problems, then you may be arrested, but if no one is hurt, and you just need hospitalization, then thats all that we'll do. Despite people's perception of us, we don't arrest everyone, and I'm sure most would agree that we'd rather just get someone who needs help to the hospital, and see them get the needed help.

As a law enforcement officer I would do my best to get you help. If it took arresting you to do that, then I would. There are many avenues available if a person is truly seeking help. You say the suicide hot line wasn't much help. To what end did they fail you. Did they make recommendations you didn't want to hear? If you were talking to an officer on-line and he contacted crisis intervention, good for him, he was trying to help. Often times we don't recognize help when it's right in front of us. If you think you want to hurt yourself, if nothing else, go to the ER and tell them. There are people that care.

All good posts. A hospital can't refuse to treat you when you tell them you don't have insurance. Find your area county hospital walk in and tell them you are seeking treatment for suicidal thoughts. They will dispatch an Officer there, or will have them on sight. While an emergency detention is a warrantless-arrest, it's not a criminal offense. You'll be evaluated and referred to a psychologist once released. The process usually takes a few hours.
