    Radio Codes

I'm wondering are all radio codes the same? Does it differ from state to state or agency to agency?

It's different from agency to agency, even in the same state. Some are the same across the board (ex: 10-4), but most change. At my first department 10-7 meant "are you clear for confidential info" (when running a suspect's criminal record), at my last department it meant "you're clear to take your 40-min shift break." In AL 10-100 means "in vehicle pursuit", but I understand that in MS it means "need a bathroom break." See the differences here?

That's so true. When I was working in Alaska, my department had their own set of 10 codes, so when I went through the Trooper Academy, I had to relearn a whole new set of codes then, of course, relearn my original department codes when I got back. Talk about a pain in the keister.

    No more codes, signals, etc.

That's why we are doing away with radio codes!! To be in compliance with the National Incident Management System(NIMS) and the National Response Plan (NRP), we have already begun using PLAIN ENGLISH.

We've got a mixture of plain English and radio codes. For instance, I've used:

In service, report taken, 2 citations issued
    10-8, status 5, status 7 2 times
In service, report taking, status 7x2.

any mixture really.. It all depends on how much radio chatter is going on at the time and if I need to get info out quickly or not
    Press hard, 5 copies...

Shoot, most of our dispatchers couldn't SPEAK plain English.
