Longest time doing nothing

The last ride-along I did we met some homicide detectives at a flea-bag motel and waited around for a good hour or so doing nothing. I asked the officers why they even had to be there and they said that sometimes detectives just like having the presence of the uniform there to deter anyone from thinking about doing something unlawful.

What is the longest stretch of time any of you have just had to sit in your patrol car or walk around doing nothing at all other than look pretty?

I have sat scene security for a entire 10 hour shift on a body recovery.

While in homicide, we kept a scene secured for a little over three days while our evidence technicians did their thing.

Of course, this was at a cattle pond, two bodies some distance from each other, dozens of shoe prints, tire tracks and almost one hundred ejected casings, projectile recovery from trees, and running metal detectors.

It was a shoot out between two coyote groups, one trying to steal the human cargo from the other.

Oh yeah, and unfortunately the public only sees the 10% on COPS.

I've had to babysit mental cases while waiting for the committal papers to be drawn up for up to 10 hours before. 10 hours just sitting in a room with a nut.

Ive said this thousands of times and agree. Ive sat for 12 hours straight just guarding scenes while the dix handled it. Ive also come to work sick as hell and not done a damn thing for 12 hours too.
