    Health/Blood Pressure

I am a college student in Indiana and was just wondering if other police departments around the country require you to have a certain blood pressure reading before they hire you? Mine is a little over from what it needs to be,
but it isn't extremely high. It runs in my family so that's part of my problem.

Its a component of a physical exam, but i've never seen anyone DQ'd because of just that item. But high BP usually leads to other problems.

Can you get it down with exercise, or are you overweight?

I have High BP also. It also runs in the family...lucky me. I take medication for it. I would recommend it for you. Most agencies will require you to get medically cleared for Fit for Duty prior to hiring. So it would be up to the doctor to clear you. If your in Hypertension mode, you may have problems getting cleared by a doctor to work in a high stress occupation.

    Good luck.

140/80 is the upper threshhold allowed (or maybe the first that is DQ) for NYPD. You'd be borderline.

And what does your doctor say about your blood pressure? I find it hard to believe that a doctor would be okay with allowing you to have blood pressure that high. Even if it runs in your family, proper diet, exercise, and drugs can lower it. While taking drugs to lower your blood pressure at such a young age will also be scrutinized during the medical exam, it's better than having blood pressure that's 150/90. That would most likely DQ you here.

hell, i think every cop ends up having high blood pressure. If you have it before you start...you're already ahead of the curve!
