When police won't help, where do you go?

My ex-girlfriend stole lots of money (about $150k) from me by identity theft and forgery. Itís extremely important for me to get justice on this, but my experience with the police afterwards has been horrible. I donít want to get too specific in case theyíre reading this, but hereís the summary:

The first detective assigned to the case seems to have had a problem with me personally, and basically did nothing, for a really long time. Wouldnít return phone calls, etc. Trust me, it was bad Ė he just wanted me to go away. After this inactivity caused the statute of limitations for theft to pass, I filed a long complaint. (Which I really didnít want to do, because I figured itíd piss them off and set the other detectives against me.) To my surprise, they then kept him on the case for a good deal of time afterwards, to let him generate some evidence of effort. And his response to the complaint contained major, flat out lies.

They eventually put a new detective on it. At first it seemed like he was actually working on it, but then he started acting the same way. I swear, Iím the only one whoís done any investigation on this: Iíve had to put in lots of time doing their work, seeking out verified writing samples she left with other police and agencies, etc. I donít mind that, but, dammit, I canít get subpoenas for the originals on my own, which the crime lab much prefers over copies. The labís had this for almost a year, and they still donít have originals to work with.

Anyway, now the detective whoís ďworkingĒ the case has been promoted to doing something else. Today he told me heíd still see the case through. But he was evasive about whether heís yet gone after subpoenas, which means no, he hasnít. And with even less motivation, thereís no way heíll do anything more.

I really donít get it. This is not just a good case in my mind. It is a good case, period, with great evidence, if theyíll get off their asses. A pretty easy win, Iíd think. But nobody wants to help. (Iíve talked to the commander, police chief, etc.)

Hereís the bottom line question: What do you do when the police arenít doing their job? The FBI tells me they canít do anything until the locals finish with it, and the postal inspector tells he they only act as support for the local police. So what higher authority is there? What do I do? If I could take my business elsewhere, I would have, a long time ago Ė itís a shame this isnít about fast food.

I'd guess that their point of view is different from yours. If they thought it was a great case with great evidence, they'd have this turd off their desk already and be dealing with other things. Obviously their are issues that are keeping them from getting you off their backs and solving this case.

As always with he said/she said/they said cases, there is a lot to the story not being revealed here.

Hire an attorney. While there may very well be a criminal case here for the identity theft and forgery, any chance of gaining compensation for your losses rests in a civil case.

And while I'm not making any excuses for their decisions (I only know the biased details that you have provided), believe me when I tell you: the police have many more investigations that are much more serious in nature than your financial loss.

First thing, your investigation is probably getting in the way of the Police investigation. If you wanted to do it yourself because you thought you could do it better, than you should have. You can present the case you've developed to the Prosecutor who will have the final say anyway.

Because it's a good case in your mind, does not mean it's a good case. You are too emotionally involved which is evident by your post. I've had air tight cases that just don't go. Prosecutors are too busy, jails are too full and the court docket is too long. As this is a non-violent crime, it takes even less priority. Also as a general rule of thumb, I don't update the victim on everything I'm doing. You'd be suprised how many times a victim turns into a suspect. I'm not going to show all my cards unless I have to.

So if you don't think the Police are doing their jobs, present your own report and evidence to the Prosecutor and ask if he'll file charges. If it's a good case, I'm sure he'll have no problem taking it.

The FBI is mostly interested in terrorism cases. Postal Inspectors have been short staffed for decades. And I have no idea what you mean about fast food.

It all revolves around proof. You think it's your ex girlfriend, you're most likely right. Now prove it.

That's the hard part in cases like this. First we have to have enough proof to justify probable cause to a magistrate. If she forged documents, unless she confesses to it, how can you prove it was she who forged your name? Forgery cases are tricky. Unless they confess, the only way I've gotten any forgery convictions is if someone fills out and signs the check in front of a store clerk, who can then testify that they saw the person sign the name.

What seems like an open and shut case really can be completely impossible to prove sometimes because of the way laws are written, and the proof required.

    GOD.

Tell God, and if what you are saying is totally true and just, he will smite the officers down with furious vengence and you will know that you have won.

If he doesn't then it probably means that the officers can clearly see that you have no case, you probably should not have trusted your crook girlfriend with $150 000, you are not going to get anywhere with this case and need to go to your local DIY centre, buy a heap of timber and nails, build a bridge and get over it.

    Dear John.

Thats quite a lot of red and qiuite a first post. Let me give it to you as we see it. You come into a Pro POLICE website and complain about the police and how they are doing things. That would be like going to a meeting of all the biggest members of the WWE and telling them you think wrestling is fake. What Im saying is be glad you can only get a dozen red tarts because what you deserve is an **** whoopin.

We all know there is a lot more to the story then what you are giving us. Im betting that you were involved in something that was not quite legal and now yoou are pissed at your girlfriend because this illegal activity did not pay off. I recommend that you go on over to lawyers.com and give them your story.

    Hope this was helpful.

Find a lawyer and sue her. Try to get a hold of documents with the forged signature and have something with her handwriting and match it up. When you have a lawyer and a case then try to go after her on criminal charges. Check your credit report and make sure they know to look out for any new activity on your name.

You cpould always just suck it up and write off the $150K as a lesson learned.

If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at the city for not hiring enough cops. It's hard to pay attention to every case when you have hundreds of open cases sitting on your desk because there aren't enough police officers to spread them around and work them properly. The most serious cases and the easiest cases to solve get the attention.
