    Thoughts about cars...

My girlfriend and I recently moved into an apartment. We are fortunate to have a Sheriff living a few doors down. He brings his police car home with him at night. The sight of that car is very comforting to her. Our complex appears to be crime free and it is my opinion that the presence of the car and the possibility of a nearby officer could be one of if not the main reason why. Shouldn't every officer who wanted one have a car of their own that they could take home every night? Does it not cost a lot of money to investigate, track down, prosecute and jail a criminal? Is it not cheaper to buy police cars? If each police car prevented just a couple of crimes a year would they not pay for themselves several times over? I think the Federal Government should support a program to make sure every officer in the country "who wants one" has a take home car. It's just my opinion but it seems it would be crime prevention money very well spent. I think it would put a dent in crime and save money.

Some do take homes, most don't. Depends. I don't think the feds have any business regulating local agencies however, in this manner.

Feds have no business mandating law enforcement, yes that is true. However cash is king and all they would have to do is offer or withhold funding to make anything happen.

Thats the first I have heard of the Feds mandating it. Is there a link for it ? I have been fortunate and between my 2 departments in 10 years I have had a take home.
