Hello one and all.

Well lets start with the background MP 95b Combat Enginner Opreration Iraqi Freedom 3 honorable discharged and currently unemployed. Getting long in the tooth at 29 and looking into filling that "EMPTY SPOT" serving my country once filled.

Heres my current situation:

Looking to use Fed money from Vet status to get into Ohio's law enforcement academy. Got a Baby boy on the way hoorah for me ;) and time for the questions for those in the know.

Worried about past..... Yeah like alot of others I was young and stupid too.

I used to hack satalite.......... Yeah u know direct tv dishnetwork free tv yeah not the best and most honest thing ever but I did..... Download MP3s of course..... Convicted of Conversion about 6 or 7 years ago plead down from fenoly to a misdemanor I was tried as an adult and served my time .... Bad time in my life a freshley minted 21 year old drunkard phase... Ummm as of late lol this is probably a joke to most of you but my mom is a nurse and to make a long storyshort she gave me vicadin (SP?) for some aches and pains that were keeping me awake during a visit post a work out with my little brother...... Yeah that pretty much covers my sorted past.....


Now what Im worried about is being disqualified via polygraph..... I know I have the mental ablity, the unusal calm that comes with combat time.... aka Im very hard to rattle. And I have all the skills needed to be a very bad man except I know right from wrong...

What I really need to know is if any of the above could would or may mess up my oppurtinity to becoome a law officer....

With 8 years from your satellite TV stuff I wouldn't be worried about it.

Taking Vicodin without a legitimate prescription is going to be tough to get over. With time however it isn't a big deal. You'll need 3-5 years to get that in your past.

Actually serving time for "conversion" is a big deal. I don't know of a single cop that has served jail time....however, I could be wrong.

30 days and that was 7 years ago since Ive not had a traffic ticket. I plead guilty to it to avoid a heavier charge to keep my TS2 security clearance with the military... Im no angel but Im honest lol thats got to count for sometthing at least it does with me.

The Vicodin (SP?) was administerd from a licenced Nurse my mother, and I wasnt taking it for a good time I wouldnt think that would be that much of a problem but then again thats why Im here to ask.


The conversion charge was for pawning a ring that belonged to my roomate.

I knew alot of LEO's from the National Gaurd, From Homicide detectives Chicago PD. Too SWAT guys from Leport and I cant say any of them are straight arrows either..... But I also belive that I wouldnt want a goodie goodie boy scout to be the one who slings his hind end on the line on a day to day basis either, Ive seen what that leads to in the military.

In my opinion, the "conversion" conviction (and jail time) will hurt your chances, because from what I understand in your posts you stole someone's property and sold it. Police agencies don't want to hire thieves, for obvious reasons.

That being said, however, all you can do is apply and go through the process. It is up to each individual agency to evaluate you as an applicant, and decide if your past is enough to DQ you. You have had a clean record since then, so that is commendable and may help balance out the negative patches in your history.

OK , a felony theft , pled to a MIsd with 30 days in jail

Your mom ( who is not a doctor or a Pharmacist ) illegally gave you meds only available by prescription. You both committed a drug offense there.

The Sat TV is not a big thing but it adds to your overall quality.

I can't say that you are automatically going to be DQ'd but you have certainly made it much more difficult to get hired because you will be competing against people who have no criminal background at all.

I'd say go and apply and see what happens. Be as honest with them as you were with us.

As I can visualize a interview of sorts I can explain all kinds of things that add to my merit, from Decorated Combat Veteran to a more than qualified understanding of weapon systems, the ablity to think underpressure which I notice alot of the bad guys lack at least on cops lol. To make desicions point blank and period good bad or ugly some times you have to choose.


Heres a good one and Im sure it differs from the Civi world.

PVT. Snuffy steals food from the BX/PX (bad idea to start with) Myself and Spc Meathead go there to aprehend conversation insues, Meathead and Myself find ouy Snuffy lives off post with 3 kids owns a POV and is out of food. Does not know of the NCO food drop, doesnt know about assistance programs ect... His chain of command failed him.... Can you guess what I did? Yeah I bought the food turned him over to his Mother (aka First SGT.) kept it in the family of sorts within the military and gave him another chance. My descion, made it and I belive it the right thing to do for the situation. Would of everyone of done that certianly not.

And I can see my self making similar descions in the future as long as my past doesnt DQ me from doing a Job I truely belive I was built to do.

Too bad for you that they are a dime-a-dozen. The problem you are going to find is that you are brining nothing special to the table (contrary to qhat you seem to believe, basd on your posts). The 30 other guys competing for 1 of 3 positions will NOT have your tainted past.

Let's pretend that your history is not disqualifying. Still, it's baggage that the others probably won't have...just a reason to NOT pick you.

It's not about qualifying and not getting the boot. It's about excelling and standing out ABOVE the crowd. Sorry, but I don't see it in what you have posted. Your bravado of why you think you are the perfect candidate matters very little, as YOU are not making the decision on who gets hired.
