I just wanted to know some info. about central Florida. I'm retiring from NYPD soon and the wife and I are looking on heading to Florida to have a house built. One of the areas we are looking at is Oviedo, FL.. Also about employment, something in the security, maybe county jails, etc.. I'am looking for any information/suggestions.
THANKS.
We have a couple of guys from FLorida here. I bet they will be along soon to help you out.

Why not check out the help wanted ads of the area ( FL ) newspapers, especially the Sunday paper ? I believe that you will be close to Orlando. Lots of service jobs available but I think you will find the pay to be lower than the NE. I always check out the jobs when I am done there just for fun. Starting pay for LEO's is not as good as PA, that is for sure.

sheba35, I tend to ramble so bear with me, there are tons of jobs in corrections, at least I know there are on the central, east coast of Florida. My neck of the woods.
Go to the orange county sheriff's website http://www.ocsd.org/ I did not see any corrections jobs on their list but might still be hiring, however I they have some in Brevard County (KSC, NASA are in that county). I also know Indian River Sheriff's Office (East Coast, Vero Beach) is hiring Corrections, I spoke to them last week.
There are also possible opportunities, in various counties, to be a baliff in the court system. You would be a sworn deputy, and paid as such.
Oviedo PD is hiring LEO's according to their website. After working in NY you would have to go through certification processes in Florida. You may want to check out the FDLE (florida dept. of law enforcement) website. You will have to get certified in corrections or law enforcement. This means going back to the academy for some of the courses regarding Florida (i.e. legal classes). Then taking the state exam to be certified.
You might want to give the counties listed below a call and if you have'nt already come down for a week and check things out. Go to different County Correctional Human Resource Departments (Brevard, Orange, Indian River, Volusia, Marion Counties). I believe this trip would qualify as a tax deduction, but I am not sure. I only play an accountant on TV "EF Nutt'in";)
I will also call my father-in-law tomorrow he is president of the 10-13 club retired nypd officers for Brevard County. He might know someone in the Orange county club who might be able to give you some more information. The 10-13 clubs are all over Florida and maybe a valuable resource.
I will be not be on-line for the next day or two. So, if I don't respond right away please don't be offended. Hoped I helped!

That's the truth!!! Unless, you go to South Florida. Pay is higher, but so is the cost of living.Originally posted by mcsap

Thanks again for all the suggestions!
Rad Diver.........
Sounds good, thanks!
This will sound crazy, but I'am really NOT looking for high pay!
I got out on a tax free disability, so I'm limited to how much I can make in a year. If I go over that limit, they'll tax my pension. But after what would be my 20th anniversary(2007), there is no income limits.
FDLE, how long is the academy? Would I have to go through the physical training or is it just law and procedure?
Sheba35,
Physical training and defensive tatics, I don't know if they are required. My last day at the academy is tomorrow, I will ask. If they have any info I will send it your way.

You might have to do a cross-over coarse and take the state cert. exam, depends on what your going for. Go to www.officer.com
Go to bottom of page and click on agencies, then click on florida. This will show you alot of the depts. in florida and links to their websites. Good luck.
