Loud Exhaust

Here is some VA code.

§ 46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.

How strictly is this enforced?
The law seems very unreasonable since many after market exhaust systems are louder than stock but not really that bad!
And do you tend to "target" high performance vehicles (follow/watch even if they have done nothing illegal).

The problem is "not that bad" is completely subjective. You may find the sound music to your ears....It may make me want to strangle someone.

When I did my ride along the officer pulled over a "ricer" with a fart pipe. He said that that was his pet peeve. The guy was also driving on a suspended license,bald tires and illegal tint.

It's a 99. LOTS of work done to it. Heads, Cam, etc... I pretty much only drive it to the track or club events.
The exhaust is pretty loud but I have not been pulled for it yet.
Pics below. Best 1/4 mile time to date is 11.28 at 122mph.
No nitrious, blower or supercharger.

Oregon has a law that says a person cannot have an exhaust that is louder than reasonably necessary for the propper operation of the vehicle. It doesn't specifically mention being factory stock.

An argument is easily made that any modified exhaust system that is louder than factory is more than required to operate the vehicle.

Judges have had mixed reactions, but there has been a significant decline in the number of those big huge mufflers running around on mitsubishis and hondas.

FLP Long Tube headers and a Borla Cat-Back system. I also installed an "electric cut-out" which I can use to close one side of the exhaust from the cockpit.

I am on LS1.com but not as much as I used to be.

It is when you add long tube headers, heavily ported heads and a beefy cam :D
I drive it on the street as little as possible actually.
I want to get the windows tinted but the only reason I don't is because I just don't need MORE attention drawn to it.

I hope people with huge peeves about the noise coming out of Ricer exhausts also have issues with the loud-***, annoying, stock exhausts of Harleys, etc. I don't like annoying modified exhausts, too, but not enough to use as my PC for a stop/cite, especially with all the double standards out there.
