Now that's the PD to work for and the guys to work with!Originally posted by gdowkpc
We still have stereos in our cars. It is a very popular thing to come up on another officer who is on a stop in the middle of the night and play some Metallica over the PA.![]()
I hit a bump too hard in the Jeep Tuesday and my radio went out. All I have to listen to is either the CB or the squeaks and rattles of the Jeep. Just something else to fix this weekend. :(
i've worked off-duty work where they just want a car in the parking lot. they could honestly care less what you do there, just so long as they have that presence. i spent four 12 hour days sitting in my patrol car using my in-car video system as entertainment last christmas. i just had a supervisor open the box to the VCR before i left, rigged the thing to play regular tapes and watched movies the entire time. it was raining everyday i worked so i was stuck in that car. it does suck watching it on a tiny 2-3 inch screen though.
Who is to say this PO was even on duty. He could have just gotten off duty but still wanted to hear what was going on, on the radio.
Don't take life so seriously, you're not gonna get out of it alive anyway!
I had just gotten done with a 16 hour shift doing foot/vehicle patrols at a fair in the area. I worked swing and grave back to back. I had originally only planned on pulling the Swing shift, but someone called in sick for the grave and I volunteered to fill in for her. So I do my thing for about 18 hours and I'm really tired... so anyway my partner and I decided to get donuts for the entire detail. [ We were working alongside another department for this one. ] One of the people from the other department wanted to ride out as well so he could pick up some beverages. So we go to this one store at about 7:45am and they're closed for another 15 minutes. So instead of waiting we went to another grocery store that was open 24/7. My partner and the person from the other PD went inside and I opted to watch the car. So I sat in the passenger seat and they took about an hour and one thing led to another and I fell asleep. The next day Im getting ready for a shift and the chief comes in and talks to me "WHO had car 173 out yesterday?" Now I wasnt about to jump in and shout out "ME!" so I said "Why" and then the chief says a citizen called in a complaint about someone sleeping in the car. So I fessed up and apologized for my unprofessional actions. not 3 minutes after he left, 5 other officer came running in like "SO!?!? Was IT YOU?!?" ... "Yeah, it was me" ... "OH MAN!!" "Its all over the Law Enforcement Bulletin everywhere!!!" ... ... So Im just sitting there like Great... now every cop within 30 miles knows I fell asleep in the car... That was my first time doing anything like that and Ive never done it since, but I still feel really bad about it everytime I look at the incident... ... Oh and I forgot to mention... when the cops ran in and asked if it was me they were like "I bet you didnt know the chief's wife is the manager of that store did you??? " So It turns out she saw a police car from her husbands PD, and decided to say hi, but saw I was asleep and told our beloved chief. oooh well...

Rest in peace.
My Sheriff doesn't treat me like a child. In fact, he even lets us carry guns. So, I guess what I'm tring to say, is that I can multi-task. Listen to mobile, radio, drive, and talk on the cell, all at the same time. Take out the radios. What a damn waste of county money.
I'm not prejudice, I hate everybody equally.
Well, I know there have been some evtrelemy boring nights while on the streets and I have often looked for things to do tokeep me awake and interested in the world around me. AS I have gotten older and am more now in the role of manager of a Watch Section, I have had to look at things from a different prespective.
What Gman said makes alot of sense. He didn't know what the officer was really doing. He may have been on a lunch break or maybe working part time security in the parking lot. Whatever the case, what was the presepction of the public? It really doesnt matter what he was doing. maybe his supervisor brought the DVD to him. Doesn't matter. What ever the public thinks we are doing out there; unless we can really prove otherwise; that's what we are doing and then the citizens go home with that bad taste in their mouths.
I firmly believe in listening to the radio in the patrol car and I would never tell one of my patrolmen that they can not. Music does alot of things for the mind and in this line of work, we need things to keep our minds working. especially on those slow nights. I would never condone watching a movie on a DVD player however.

WARHEADS ON FOREHEADS!!!!
K9 officer in a neighboring department had a 10 disc cd changer installed in his patrol car. the department is fine with it as long as it doesnt interfere with his ability to hear the radio
