    overtime pay in NYPD

    Hello.

I am trying to find out how much on the average do NYC cops get in overtime. Also, what about the first year.

Is there anyone I can ask this question?

    Thanks,

    Eugene.

Type out a list of questions and I'll call one of my friends.

He may not be available until tommorow morning, but that gives you the day to figure out what you want to know.

hopefully it is a lot because there base pay is discraceful. Starting salary for a nypd cop is $31,305. In comparison San Francisco cops start at $56,559.

    lorus.................

If your thinking about becoming a member of the NYPD, I would have to HIGHLY suggest you look elsewhere, that is, if your looking to make money. Overtime is very limited. Back eight or more years ago, overtime was readily available, mostly through arrests. However, ever since Giuliani became mayor, overtime was cut dramatically. Now a days your lucky if you get eight hours overtime on a check. Some units like narcotics get a little more o/t, but not much. This is mostly through newer procedure they implimented to speed time in processing arrests.

And forget about any pay raises for the next century, it won't happen. When you first start in the academy, you'll take home about, $600.00 every two weeks, who can live on that in NY? Top pay takes five years to reach, and that pay is nothing to write home about!

Apply for Nassau County, Suffolk County, Rockland County and NYS Troopers. Everybody makes alot more money!

I don't think so! Those days are gone with "LAPS" and re-assigning collars. I miss those 20 hours o/t on ONE collar!

According to my buddy, they aren't completely gone.

You just have to have a different strategy.

I didn't ask what the new strategy was though...

    Didn't really care.

Hey - Try SCPD, low crime rate, one of the safest cities in North America, and the cops start off at around 65K a year. (got up to nearly $90K == more with advanced degrees and advanced POST certs)

I believe our dept is among the highest paid in the nation if not the highest. However, our hiring is very limited. I am in suffolk county. I know Nassau is opening up for new hires in January I believe.

I would avoid NYPD if I were you as well. Come out to the island.

Suffolk County Police Department, Long Island, New York. Base pay is currently at over $84k with our new contracts. However, Newsday did a study and found that the average officer in our department made $105k last year. I fall right into that with a touch more. There is a great deal of OT available. Rather than hiring new officers, they would rather pay us the OT. It has caused a great deal of fall out within the community.
